On the afternoon of Friday, May 23rd, 2025, a local official was reportedly killed in an alleged Israeli drone strike on al-Trans Street in the al-Amal neighbourhood of Khan Younis.
The victim was identified by Facebook users Reem Zaher and Samir al-Sharif as the director of the office of the mayor of Khan Younis, 34-year-old engineer Abdul Aziz (Izz al-Din) Sufyan al-Sharif. Samir al-Sharif, a likely relative, revealed that Abdul Aziz’s home was targeted by an Israeli airstrike in the al-Amal neighbourhood located west of Khan Younis. On Facebook, Al-Quds channel and Mohamed Awad also reported that “a Palestinian was killed in an Israeli airstrike on al-Trans Street in the al-Amal neighbourhood, west of Khan Younis.”
Abdul Aziz’s name has been matched with the Palestinian Ministry of Health (MoH) lists, which include national ID numbers. Since October 26, 2023, the MoH has released a number of lists of fatalities. Airwars is matching individuals to the first list where their name appeared. In regard to this incident, the name of the victim was matched to the ninth “Palestinian Ministry of Health List of Fatalities in Gaza”, which was released on June 23, 2025.
Sources close to the victim referred to Abdul Azziz as an “engineer”. In a Facebook post, Bahaa N. Budair expressed her sorrow at the loss of her friend and former classmate from the College of Engineering. Bahaa N.Budair described Abdul Azziz as a “distinguished student”, a “creative engineer”, and a “loyal official” with “high morals in dealing with others.” On Facebook, Hussam Ayid lamented the death of his “childhood friend” dear to his heart while ArchCh Tahrir El Farra shared his disbelief and sadness at the news of the passing of his colleague from the Organization Department in the municipality.
Based on the posting time of sources, it can be inferred that the incident very likely occurred early in the afternoon. Lse Aceh Blessings of Sharing “Urgent” update report, posted at around 4:29 p.m., released initial information about the incident, indicating the incident took place shortly before. Al-Quds Channel and New Life – alhaya.ps earliest reports on Facebook were both issued at 2:37 p.m.
Footage of the aftermath of the incident was made publicly available on Facebook by the singer Mohammed al-Sharif. Soot marks from an explosion are visible in the first-floor garage, where the doors were destroyed. A fire truck can be seen spraying water onto the upper floors of the building, likely the home of Abdul Aziz Sufyan al-Sharif.
