Airwars assessment
In the late afternoon of June 24, 2024, at around 3pm, at least three members of a committee securing aid were killed by an alleged Israeli airstrike in Al-Shati refugee camp, west of Gaza City. The strike occurred near a humanitarian aid provisions center in Al-Shati Refugee Camp. Of the committee members who were killed, only one was identified: a man named Mahmoud Harb Abu al-Baraa.
Twitter/X user @PalinfoAr reported the incident at 3:14 PM and three deaths resulting from it. Other social media sources corroborated this information.
On Facebook, Mahmoud Harara shared a photo of Mahmoud Harb Abu al-Baraa and wrote: “The martyrdom of our beloved Mahmoud Harb Abu Al-Baraa, who was targeted while securing the aid distribution center in Al-Shati refugee camp, west of Gaza City.” The photo shows Mahmoud looking at the camera with a smile, wearing a black jalabiya.
Where most sources indicated that three aid workers were killed at the location, one source, Tawfiq Abdullah Abu Suleiman, wrote: “Four martyrs as a result of targeting aid security committees near the Al-Shati provisions center, west of Gaza City. Among them, the martyr Mahmoud Harb Abu Al-Baraa has been identified.” Social media users often insert characters within words to evade shadow bans on terms they believe are censored by platforms, including the word “martyr.”
A video released by Al Jazeera Egypt on the day of the incident, lasting less than 20 seconds, shows a group of people standing around two shrouded bodies. In the background, an ambulance is visible, with members of the civil defense in uniform standing near its open doors, indicating they are preparing to transport the bodies.
Most sources have identified a belligerent, attributing the alleged strike to the Israeli military.
The incident occured at approximately 3:00 pm local time.
The victims were named as:
