Airwars assessment
On July 24th, 2024, 51-year-old Iyad Abdul Ghani al-Hamas (Abu Karam), was killed by Israeli forces in the Al-Fazb market area in Qizan Al-Najjar, south of Khan Younis city.
At approximately 4.40PM Facebook user Mohamed Awad identified the victim killed near the bicycle market south of Khan Unis as Iyad. Shortly thereafter Rafah Now, @shaabradio and several other social media users posted urgent appeals reporting the incident and identifying Iyad as the victim. No further details of the incident were reported and the belligerent was not identified.
Posting on Facebook Iyad’s brother-in-law, Yousef Elhams, mourned Iyad “as a new moon” and asked God to “accept him into the highest paradise.” In a photo shared alongside the post and circulated by friends and family on social media Iyad is depicted as a middle aged man in a blue cap taking a selfie in front of the views atop a high rise building. Facebook user Majed Asad Shalayel described Iyad as a “man of good reputation and morals” and asked that God “accept him into his heavens.”
Where possible, names have been matched with the Palestinian Ministry of Health (MoH) lists, which include national ID numbers. Since October 26, 2023 the MoH has released six lists, along with an additional list of medical professionals, which was released on September 15, 2024. Airwars is matching individuals to the first list where their name appeared. In regard to this incident, Iyad was found on the sixth ‘Palestinian Ministry of Health List of Fatalities in Gaza’ list,
While none of the sources attributed Iyad’s death to a belligerent, the MoH list explicitly mentions that names on the list are “victims of the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip”. Therefore this incident has been graded as a single source claim. However, as multiple sources reported the death of Iyad, this incident has been graded as “fair”.
The local time of the incident is unknown.
The victims were named as:
