Around midnight on Sunday, November 4, 2024, at least one civilian, a doctor, was injured in an alleged Israeli strike that hit the Kamal Adwan Hospital in Beit Lahia, North Gaza governorate, in the Gaza Strip.
Sources identified the victim as Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital. The specific munition allegedly used was unclear, with some sources reporting a drone strike and others discussing the presence of quadcopters nearby.
The Palestinian Press Agency Safa News reported at around 12:44 AM that Dr. Hussam had been injured in an “Israeli bombing” that hit the Kamal Adwan Hospital, with other news sources including Al Hadath Palestine and Al Jazeera Arabic corroborating that he had been injured. Facebook user Siham-Haifa Daoud further elaborated that the doctor “while checking on patients inside the hospital”, had been injured by shrapnel, allegedly from a bomb that had been dropped by a “quadcopter drone….from the arsenal of the Israeli Army that deliberately bombed the hospital.” They quoted the doctor as having said “my injury is an honor for me.”
The Palestinian Information Center posted a video of Dr. Hussam originally published by Al Jazeera Arabic that showed him being treated at the hospital – he is seen visibly crying out in pain, his leg wrapped in bandages. The Center corroborated the cause of the injury as being from an Israeli strike – with the reporter in the video noting that the doctor had been injured in his thigh, and that the strike had been the third consecutive day of bombing at the Kamal Adwan Hospital.
TRT Arabic shared a similar video showing an injured and moaning Dr. Hussam being rushed in on a gurney for treatment, the voices of children can be heard crying in the background. The video also showed footage of damaged oxygen tanks, with the caption stating that another Israeli strike had hit the hospital’s main oxygen station at dawn. Facebook user Yassine Ben Chekroun reported the same.
Umm Khaled Maghrabi shared another video with the doctor, in the midst of his treatment, saying ”They keep on [attacking] us, we will keep on standing. Whatever happens and whatever this costs us we will keep on doing our human duty, we will keep on helping people.” Khaled noted that the doctor’s son had been killed by Israeli forces in a previous incident.
Facebook user Ebrahim Msalam posted saying Dr. Hussam was injured “in the hospital that loves him and which he loves”, and that “North Gaza is being annihilated.” An image shared by Ebrahim showed him with Dr. Hussam at the doctor’s office. That and other images of the doctor before his injury, shared by various sources, show him as a middle aged man with greying hair and a dignified yet kind countenance, dressed in his navy blue hospital scrubs. Hoda Alian called the doctor “heroic”, and requested prayers towards his recovery.
Facebook page Gaza Days posted the following day that the condition of the doctor had worsened after his injury by the quadcopter “while working inside the hospital.”
Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to Israeli forces.
