Airwars Assessment
On Wednesday, April 30 2025 a Palestinian fisherman, 26-year-old Khamis Abdul Latif Bakr, was killed in an attack allegedly by Israeli naval forces while working in Gaza City’s coastal waters. The time of the incident is not known, and no information is available about additional casualties. This assessment will be updated if more information emerges.
Social media users and multiple relatives of Khamis Abdul Latif Bakr shared news of his death online. He had been killed while working, fishing in his small Hasakah boat, according to local sources. Khamis “went to earn them [his family] scraps and returned carried on the shoulders of a sniper.”
Family members including Zakaria Bakr, Sohaib Bakr, and Abd Bakr posted messages of condolence. He was remembered as “beloved” and a “good young man.” One relative wrote: “Our cousin, the martyr Khamis Abdul Latif Bakr, who was martyred in the Gaza Strip this morning. May God console the hearts of his mother and his wife, who said goodbye to her martyred sister two days ago…” Jaafar Bakr Abu Qusay shared a video of mourners praying over a deceased Khamis, closing his half-shut eyes, and asked that he be able to “make Paradise [his] home.”
Relatives also shared photographs of the deceased. Khamis was a young man with short black hair, a beard, and a mustache. According to Shireen Monitor, he was from the North Gaza governorate.
El Hassan Ali Baker shared condolences on Facebook and added: “Condolences will be accepted for the martyrs of the Bakr family on Friday May 2 2025 in Cairo, Nasr City, at the Armed Forces Mosque ‘Al-Firdaws Hall’ opposite City Stars Mall in Nasr City, Arab Republic of Egypt, from 7:30-10:30. For men and women.”
While sources agreed that Khamis was killed on his boat, they diverged slightly regarding strike type. While journalist Saher Al-Aqraa alleged Khamis was killed by “Israeli gunboats,” and Khamis Bakr Abu Hatem pointed to the “Israeli…navy,” Gigaza claimed his death was due to “Israeli… aircraft.” Others pointed to non-specific “bombing” or “sniper” fire.
Khamis’s name has been matched with the Palestinian Ministry of Health (MoH) lists, which include national ID numbers. Airwars is matching individuals to the first list where their name appeared. In regard to this incident, names are matched to the ninth ‘Palestinian Ministry of Health List of Fatalities in Gaza’ list, which was released on June 23, 2025.
Where sources identified belligerents, all sources attributed the incident to the Israeli military.
