Airwars assessment

On the evening of Monday, December 18th, 2023, at least four people from one family, including a woman and two children, were reportedly killed by an airstrike allegedly perpetrated by the Jordanian military on a farm near the town of Theybin (Dhibin) located south of the Al Suwiyda city area, close to Syrian-Jordanian border. Several civilians were also injured, and a large number of livestock died as a result of the farm’s destruction.

According to the Syrian Human Rights Observatory, the Al-Suwayda Governorate declared that the airstrike killed four people, including a woman and two kids. The news outlet Suwayda 24 disclosed that Abu Jumah Al-Hamada, a man from the Al-Asfar village who dedicated his life to livestock herding, resided with his family on the destroyed farm. Multiple sources added that the structure collapsed above them and ended up killing them along with some of their livestock. However, it is unclear from the sources whether Abu Jumah Al-Hamada survived the incident.

A medical source from the Suwayda National Hospital revealed that three bodies and one injured were received and pointed out the victims were barely recognizable since the features of some of them were turned into pieces. A photo of the victims covered in blankets was posted, and a video of the site of the bombing where visible smoke was rising. Other pictures posted show the farm destroyed.

Where sources identified the belligerent, all the sources identified the Jordanian forces as the perpetrators of the attack.

The news outlet Suwayda 24 and Facebook user Alsharq revealed that the belligerents carried out multiple strikes on the farms and sites allegedly belonging to drug smuggling gangs affiliated with Iran in the village of Umm Shama and in the town of Dhibin. However, Airwars has not found any evidence that the civilians killed in this incident were involved in the drug smuggling activities.

The incident occured in the evening.
