In what was described as the largest US drone attack on Pakistani soil, as many as eight drones clustered for a mass strike in north Waziristan, to kill Haqqani Network leader Sirajudin Haqqani – firing 19 missiles between them. In this first of four linked strikes, up to 29 militants were killed in Toor Narai village, local and international media reported.

The strikes, which all sources reported were carried out by US drones, struck houses and training sites in al-Qaeda and Taliban strongholds.

Reports put the death toll at “at least” ten and as many as 29 – the highest reported by the CNN.

The suspected target, Haqqani, was reportedly not killed. A commander of the group who spoke on the condition of anonymity told CNN that Haqqani “is alive and was not in the area at the time of the attack.”

In January 2014 the Bureau published a secret Pakistani document, a list of drone strikes and casualties. It recorded 24 people killed in this strike and the subsequent attack (Ob66). However the document conflates the two strikes in one entry, saying 24 locals “at two different places in village Mohammad Khel and Degan of Tehsil Datta Khel.”

None of the known sources reported about civilian harm resulting from the strikes.

The remaining three strikes took place in Deegan, Muhammad Khel and Pai Khel, respectively described in Ob66, Ob67 and Ob68.
