Airwars assessment

On the evening of Thursday, March 7th, 2024, two civilian farmers were killed and one other was injured in an alleged airstrike by the Turkish forces on the village of Deuki near the Gara mountain located in the Shiladzi district, Duhok governorate in southern Kurdistan, Iraq.

According to the sources, the director of Shiladzi district, Rizgar Sarki, confirmed the deaths of two and the injury of one civilian. However, the Independent Arabia reported that the director claimed there had been two injuries instead of one.

Roj News and Rudaw News provided details on the identities of the victims of the deadly strike and shared their images. The Abdul Ghani Mustafa Facebook account reported the victims were farmers.

35-year-old Saeed Mubarak Dweiki was reportedly killed in the incident. He was a man with thick eyebrows, a long nose, thin lips, and a beard with short straight hair. In the photo posted, he was wearing a light gray shirt with a black t-shirt under it, a black jacket, and black ear muffs. His brother, Saleh Mubarak, was reportedly injured in the incident. However, as he is depicted in a Peshmerga uniform in an image posted Rudaw News, he has been counted as a military member.

The other victim, 29-year-old Araz Faraj, was also reportedly killed in the incident. He had black eyes, thick eyebrows, a long nose, thin lips, and a beard with short wavy hair. In a photo posted, he was wearing a white shirt with a navy blue jacket.

The victims’ families and the director of Shiladzi district claimed that they all were residents of the Deuki (Dewiki) village and were reportedly heading to the foothills of Mount Zibarian in the Shaladzi district to collect wild spring herbs when the incident happened. However, ANF news reported that they were originally from Breski village.

All the sources identified the Turkish military as the belligerent.

According to the Zagros news media, the Turkish army announced they launched various strikes against members of the Kurdistan Worker’s Party. As reported by Independent Arabia News, the Turkish Ministry of Defense said that its forces carried out two airstrikes in northern Iraq and northern Syria the evening of the incident, killing six militants in Iraq and seven in Syria. However, the Ministry did not provide further information in its post on the “X” platform and did not specify the areas targeted by the two strikes either. Therefore, it is not clear whether it was referring to the same incident that occurred in northern Iraq.

The incident occured in the evening.

The victims were named as:

Saeed Mubarak Dweiki سعيد مبارك دويكي
35 years old male killed
Araz Faraj  أراز فرج
