Airwars assessment
Around 6:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 18th, 2024, Osman (Othman) Roshdi was killed and a civilian was seriously injured by a bombing attack reportedly carried out by the Turkish military in the Khastu village located in the south of Şiladziin in the north of Dohuk Governorate, southern Kurdistan, Iraq. Sources are conflicted as to whether Osman was a civilian or a member of the Peshmerge.
According to the reports, Osman Roshdi, a resident of the village, was 32 years old. He was married without kids and worked as a beekeeper in the area. In a photo shared by multiple sources, he was wearing a gray polo shirt. He had a fair complexion, thin eyebrows, brown eyes, a gray beard, and short, straight gray hair.
According to Rudaw news, the victim was beekeeping in Bariske village when warplanes bombed the area. “He had a wife but not children… he was a member of the Peshmerga forces,” the report said. This information was also revealed by Rojnews.
However, other sources referred to the person killed as a civilian. Therefore, the civilian status of the victim is contested until further information comes to light.
Another resident of the village was seriously injured and later transferred for treatment to a hospital nearby. No further details about the victim were disclosed.
Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to the Turkish military.
Furthermore, multiple sources highlighted increased military activity, particularly in the Duhok governorate, where more than 100 villages were evacuated due to the armed conflict.
The incident occured at approximately 6:00 am local time.
