During the afternoon of Wednesday, September 4th, 2024, three members of one family, including a child, were killed as a result of an alleged Turkish drone strike on a civilian Toyota Land Cruiser vehicle on the Dokan-Khalkan road near the village of Khalkan in the Dokan district of the Sulaymaniyah Governorate of Iraq.
Muzaffar Hussein Khader and his two sons Muhammad Muzaffar Hussein and Mubin Muzaffar Hussein were killed when the drone strike struck the car they were in. Muhammad was 18 years old and Mubin was 14, and were in 12th grade and ninth school grades respectively. Rudaw News attached the portraits of Muhammad, Mubin and their father dressed smartly and smiling.
According to Kamran Othman, a member of the American Peacemakers (CPT) organization in Iraqi Kurdistan who commented to Shafaq News, all the victims of the drone strike were from one family and were residents of the village of Kafr Dol in Hajiawa district. The head of the family, Muzaffar Hussein Khader, worked in the arms trade in Hajiawa district. Two of his sons who were with him in the car were killed.
The car was reportedly situated on the road between the areas of Khalkan, Kani, and Taman. Rudaw News further reported that the three were difficult to identify, due to the severity of the burns received following the strike. Dokan district mayor Sirwan Sarhad told AFP that the bodies were completely burnt.
Al Araby News reported a similar account but also added a photo of the burnt car that was struck in the strike. The funeral was attended by many people and the victims were laid to rest in the Makok cemetery in the town of Hajiawa, reported Hawar News as evidenced in an image shared by Shafaq News.
Where sources attributed the strike to a belligerent, they were unanimous in identifying the Turkish military as responsible for the attack.
