Airwars assessment
On Tuesday, September 10, 2024, at 5:05 PM, up to three women were injured, one of them critically, in an airstrike or drone attack allegedly perpetrated by the Turkish military on a residential house in the Makhmour (also called Rustam Judi) IDP camp located 60 Km southwest of Erbil in the Erbil region of Iraq. Additionally, one person was reportedly killed and two injured according to the Commander of the sixth axis of the Peshmerga forces. Still, it is not clear whether he spoke about one of the injured women who may have succumbed to her injuries, or other victims.
Initial reports identified the injured victims as women Kula Ozik, Adiba Baksoy, and Azima Kabul, with one of them in critical condition. Sirwan Barzani, the commander of the sixth axis of the Peshmerga forces, announced that one person had been killed and two others had been injured in the bombing of Makhmur camp. According to him, the civilian status of the victims was not known.
At the time of the attack, both the United Nations and an Iraqi delegation were present in the camp inhabited by around 10,000 people, conducting activities such as issuing IDs, ration cards, and a population census. The commander later explained to Rudaw Media Network that a drone bombed the Makhmour camp at 5:05 PM.
Hawar News reported about the incident at 19:15 local time on September 10, 2024. The photos from the scene shared by Hawar News and Roj News showed people gathered in the camp amidst debris. One image depicted the death of an orange-striped cat, while others showed military personnel at the scene, along with a gray cloud of smoke rising from the area.
Where sources identified the belligerent, the attack was attributed by all the sources to the Turkish military.
