Airwars Assessment
Along with “international security partners”, the Somali National Army reportedly killed dozens of Al-Shabaab militants in airstrikes near Bida Isse and Geriile “under the newly liberated town of Eeldheer in Galmudug” on 5 October, 2024. Estimates of Al-Shabaab casualties ranged from 47 to “more than 100”.
Mogadishu 24, reporting 47 militants killed, also reported the complete destruction of a vehicle used by the group. Sources quoting the Ministry of Information stated that the vehicle was packed “with explosives”. This casualty toll was repeated by Shabelle Media Network and SONNA, though Anadolu Agency, quoted by Yani Safak News, increased the estimate to over 100.
Though Shabelle Media described the local population as “apprehensive” over future airstrikes, no civilian casualties were reported. The Network thanked “local heroes and international friends” for their role in the operation.
While no sources directly implicated the US in the operation, the Somali government’s reference to airstrikes and “international partners” has in the past indicated US involvement but could also refer to Turkish involvement or United Arab Emirates involvement.
