US Launches Airstrike in Somalia Targeting ISIS Affiliate in Puntland
@DecampDave
US Africa Command said in a press release on Wednesday that its forces launched an airstrike in Somalia on June 2 that targeted the ISIS affiliate in the northeastern Puntland region, as the Trump administration continues bombing the country at a record pace.
AFRICOM said the strike occurred southeast of the port city of Bassaso and claimed it was conducted in “coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia.” However, Puntland is not controlled by the US-backed government, and the US has been backing local Puntland forces that are fighting ISIS on the ground.
The command offered no other details about the strike as it has stopped sharing casualty estimates or assessments of potential civilian harm. “Specific details about units and assets will not be released to ensure continued operations security,” AFRICOM said.

New airstrikes were carried out in 4 locations between the Balade and Miraale valleys, according to Puntland, by US warplanes that regularly target ISIS.
A statement from the anti-ISIS operation command said that the strikes specifically targeted ISIS fighters who were on the run, hiding in caves in the mountains.
The operation was reported to have killed more than 10 ISIS members who were hiding in the Shakalayan area, between the Miraale and Balade valleys.
Two days ago, Puntland’s Counter-Terrorism Service captured the ISIS leadership headquarters in the Miraale valley, while also seizing key water wells and the group’s defense sites.
Some ISIS fighters have also gathered in the Balade River near the city of Bosaso, which is also a strategic location for them to seek shelter from US airstrikes.
The operation against ISIS is nearing its end, with Puntland having successfully liberated all areas that ISIS had controlled for the past 15 years.

Bosaso, Somalia – Armed clashes broke out in recent hours between Puntland regional forces and ISIS militants approximately 32 kilometers outside the coastal city of Bosaso, resulting in fatalities on both sides, according to security sources.
The confrontation occurred in the rugged Shaakaalooyin area, between the Miraale and Baalade valleys, where airstrikes were also reported. It remains unclear whether the strikes were carried out by U.S. or UAE forces, both of which have previously supported counterterrorism operations in the region.
Regional security officials told that the number of active ISIS fighters in Puntland is estimated to be between 100 and 200. These militants reportedly rely on mobile guerrilla tactics and, in some cases, use women and children as human shields to complicate military responses.
This latest violence underscores ongoing efforts by Puntland authorities to root out ISIS-linked groups from their mountainous hideouts in northeastern Somalia.

More than 50 ISIS terrorists have been killed in fighting between Puntland forces and ISIS militants in the past 48 hours in the Al-Miskaad mountains of Bari region.
Most of the operations took place in the Miraale and Baallade rivers, and Puntland forces, supported by Puntland and US warplanes, entered areas where ISIS militants had taken refuge, having been expelled from Miraale, the main ISIS command in the Horn of Africa.
Puntland forces lost two soldiers in the fighting, while three others were wounded.
A large number of weapons, ammunition, drones and military equipment were seized from ISIS terrorists in the operation, according to leading officials.
Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni, who is expected to return to Bosaso today, will announce the end of Phase 3 of the operation to eliminate ISIS terrorists, and will move on to Phase 4.
During Operation Hilaa, Puntland forces cleared a large area of about 350-KM, where the terrorist group ISIS had an official presence and was carrying out terrorist acts. Their elimination brought Puntland a historic victory and international allies who were convinced that Puntland is an official friend, with military and political power.
