CAL-MISKAAD (DAYNIILE.COM)-The US drones carried out the heaviest airstrikes in the Calmiskaad mountains of Bari region in Puntland, where they are fighting ISIS while Puntland forces are facing each other. The airstrikes that took place last night are reported to have targeted ISIS strongholds in the Baallade stream in Bari region, and specifically hit areas such as the Barikalla Well, the Bocool Well, the Hays Well, the Wayjaaqda Well, the Burtuciso Well, and the Sadaw Well, all in Baallade. Recent reports from Puntland officials say that the tunnels bombed by ISIS were the ones that were being collected in recent weeks and that the US finally carried out the heaviest airstrikes in recent times. However, no one has explained the casualties suffered by ISIS fighters, whether it is Puntland officials or those from the US AFRICOM. POLITICAL NEWS OFFICE DAYNIILE.COM

Garowe (KAAB TV) –   Puntland security sources confirm that the United States Africa Command (US AFRICOM), working in concert with Puntland defence forces, carried out air-strikes on hideouts of the Islamic State in Somalia (ISS) (also known as Daesh) on Thursday night. The airstrike occurred in the Baallade Valley of the Calmiskaad mountainous area where the Puntland forces have been battling the ISIS-Somalia since late last year. The operation focused on known cave and trench systems in the stream’s vicinity, where militants had been isolated. According to officials, the bombed locations included the wells and sites at Hays, Barikallah and Maraagade within the Baallade area, where Puntland troops had encircled the target group. Following the nighttime bombardment, early this morning the defence forces carried out ground assaults on the same targeted zones—aimed at ensuring no fighters escaped or are regrouping in the area. The operation is reported to still be underway, with clearing and sweep efforts in the rugged terrain of the Baallade valley to eliminate remaining militant presence. As yet there is no official breakdown of casualties, damage to infrastructure or civilian impact. This air-ground campaign is part of a broader counter-terrorism operation in the Cal Miskaad Mountains / Baallade region of Puntland, where ISS has maintained a foothold. USAFRICOM confirmed an air-strike in the region on 7 July 2025, emphasising precision targeting of hideouts in the Baallade valley. On 24 August 2025, local officials reported overnight U.S. air-strikes on ISS positions in Baallade, specifically in “Maraagade” area. The rugged terrain—cave systems, wells, valley streams—has made clearing operations challenging, hence the combination of air-strikes followed by ground sweeps. The air strikes targeted militants sheltering in the Baallade valley and adjoining mountainous terrain. Immediately afterward, ground forces commenced operations to exploit the disruption caused by the air-strikes and prevent escape.

GAROWE, Somalia, Oct 28, 2025 — The United States military said Tuesday it carried out two airstrikes against ISIS-Somalia militants in the rugged Al Miskaad mountain range of Puntland’s Bari region, a remote stronghold for the jihadist faction in northeastern Somalia. US Africa Command (AFRICOM) said the strikes took place on October 24 and 26 in the Al Miskaad mountains, around 85 kilometres (53 miles) southeast of Bosaso, a key port city along the Gulf of Aden. “AFRICOM, alongside the Federal Government of Somalia and the Somali Armed Forces, continues to take action to degrade ISIS-Somalia’s ability to threaten the US homeland, our forces, and our citizens abroad,” the command said in a statement. It gave no casualty figures, citing operational security, and said civilian harm assessments have been suspended since April. Regional security officials in Puntland confirmed the operations, saying local forces had intensified efforts against ISIS cells in the mountainous region, working closely with US counterparts on intelligence and logistics. ISIS-Somalia, which split from al-Shabaab nearly a decade ago, has maintained a presence in Puntland’s Golis mountain range, using caves and valleys as hideouts to regroup and train fighters. Despite repeated operations, the group continues to mount small-scale ambushes and extortion activities in remote areas. Puntland authorities have recently claimed progress against ISIS-Somalia, saying the group has been largely weakened, though residents report sporadic clashes continuing in the Al Miskaad area. ISIS-Somalia first emerged in 2015 after a faction within al-Shabaab defected and pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group. It has since remained limited in size but persistent, operating mainly in the country’s north. The latest strikes underscore Washington’s renewed focus on Puntland, where US and Somali forces have increased joint operations this year. AFRICOM has also continued its air campaign in support of the Mogadishu-based federal government’s offensive against al-Shabaab in central and southern Somalia. According to figures compiled by Antiwar.com, the two new strikes bring the total number of US airstrikes in Somalia this year to 86, already surpassing previous annual records. The Trump administration set the prior record in 2019 with 63 strikes, while President Biden authorised 51 during his four-year term.
