MOGADISHU, Somalia — The Somali National Army (SNA), backed by international partners, killed 17 Al-Shabaab militants in a targeted airstrike in the Middle Shabelle region, the government announced Tuesday. The overnight operation took place in the Jabad Godone area, targeting a strategic compound used by the Al-Qaeda-linked group to coordinate attacks and manufacture improvised explosive devices (IEDs) intended for civilian targets. “The operation targeted a site used by the Al-Shabaab terrorist group to plan and coordinate terrorist activities,” the military said in a statement. “As a result of the operation, 17 terrorist operatives were killed.” In addition to the militant casualties, the SNA reported that a cache of weapons and several vehicles used for “criminal activities” were completely destroyed during the strike. The Somali government frequently uses the term “international partners” to refer to allied forces—most notably the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) or African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) forces—that provide air support and intelligence for ground operations. Mogadishu has intensified its offensive against Al-Shabaab over the past two years, combining military pressure with economic sanctions to dismantle the group’s network. The SNA reaffirmed its commitment Tuesday to “dismantle Al-Shabaab in order to ensure the security, stability, and safety of the Somali people.” Al-Shabaab, which has been waging a bloody insurgency against the fragile central government for over 15 years, remains in control of vast rural swathes of southern and central Somalia despite recent military setbacks.

Tuesday January 13, 2026 Mogadishu (HOL) — Somali National Army forces, working with international partners, carried out an overnight airstrike in the Middle Shabelle region that killed 17 militants and destroyed weapons and vehicles used in attacks on civilians, the military said Tuesday. The strike took place late Monday in the Jabad Godone area, a location the army described as a planning site for militant operations, particularly bombings targeting civilians and public infrastructure. In a statement, the Somali National Army said the operation eliminated fighters linked to the al-Qaida-affiliated group al-Shabab, which Somali officials often refer to as the Khawarij, a term used to describe extremist factions. The military said the strike also destroyed equipment and vehicles used to carry out attacks. Officials said the operation was part of a broader campaign aimed at disrupting the group’s ability to organize and execute bombings in central Somalia, where militants continue to target civilians, security forces and government officials. The army reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining planned operations against the group, saying the goal remains to restore security and stability and protect the Somali population. Middle Shabelle has been a key battleground in Somalia’s long-running fight against al-Shabab. Despite sustained pressure from Somali forces backed by international partners, the group continues to operate in rural areas, using them as staging grounds for attacks. The Somali government has said intensified military operations, including airstrikes and ground offensives, are essential to weakening the group’s operational capacity and preventing further attacks on civilians.

Mogadishu – The Somali National Army (SNA), supported by international security partners, conducted a targeted airstrike overnight in the Middle Shabelle region, reportedly dismantling a key Al-Shabaab logistical facility. The operation took place in the Jabad Godone area and resulted in the deaths of 17 militants, according to a statement released by defense officials. Targeting IED Production Defense sources indicated that the strike specifically targeted a facility used by the group to manufacture Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and plan attacks against civilian areas. The location served as a coordination center for the group’s operations in the region. The operation also resulted in the destruction of a cache of weapons and several vehicles used by the militants for transport and logistics. Sustained Offensive The SNA described the strike as part of a “scheduled” series of operations aimed at degrading Al-Shabaab’s capabilities in Middle Shabelle, a region that has seen intensified military activity in recent months. In a brief statement following the operation, army command reiterated its commitment to dismantling the group’s infrastructure to ensure the “security, stability, and protection” of the Somali population. This latest strike follows a pattern of increased aerial pressure on Al-Shabaab’s rural strongholds, intended to disrupt the group’s ability to mass forces or prepare complex attacks on urban centers.
