JAMAAME, Somalia — Somali special forces carried out a planned operation against Al-Shabaab fighters in Lower Juba region, targeting militant hideouts near the town of Jamaame, military officials said on Tuesday. The Ministry of Defense, which released the statement, said that the attack, which was followed by direct fire, killed 14 terrorists and wounded others. “The Danab Special Forces of the Somali National Army, in collaboration with the security forces of the Jubaland Regional State, today carried out a planned operation targeting the Khawarij militias, which took place in areas under the control of Jamaame town in Lower Juba region. The operation killed 14 terrorists, another was wounded, while the other militants fled the scene,” the statement said. The Somali government also said that it will continue the operation, and is committed to eliminating terrorist groups in the regions of the country. “The Ministry of Defense and the Somali National Army Command reiterate their commitment to eliminating Khawarij terrorism, so that the Somali people can live in peace and stability, and ensure the overall security of the country,” it added. The Jubbaland and Danaba forces have been conducting intensive preparations in recent days to target Al-Shabaab bases in the Lower Juba region, especially around the Jamaame district, where the group has been organizing attacks against the forces in recent times.
