Airwars Assessment

Last Updated: May 21, 2025

At least 14 people were reported injured by an alleged bombardment on Al-Arbaeen Street in the Sha’oub District of Yemen’s capital, Sana’a on 5 May, 2025. While most sources alleged US involvement, one source claimed the damage was due to a failed Houthi missile launched in an attempt to “intercept a US reconnaissance plane”.

While most sources, including @BelqeesTV, reported 14 injured, some provided a slightly higher injury toll of 16. Sources agreed on the location of the strike, writing that it was a commercial area and that many shops were damaged with their owners injured.

Photographs shared by Facebook user Abo Kalel confirmed the extensive damage: shattered glass strewn across a street, swathes of blood on a hospital floor, and a deep crater where the missile presumably landed. Included in the series of photographs are pictures of injured men, including one man with lower facial and neck bandages, another man lying on a hospital bed with bloodied shorts and bandages on his head, arm, and leg, another man, face contorted in pain, as he received medical care, and a young man or teenager, attached to an IV. Similar scenes were shown in a video shared by Facebook user “Where is the explosion now?”

While most users alleged the strike was an act of “US aggression”, Twitter/X user @wdysb495515 attributed the bombardment to the Houthis: “a number of civilians were injured and shops damaged […] as a result of a missile launched by the Houthi militia from the Sarf area to intercept a US reconnaissance plane. The missile failed and fell near the Damran Center mall, leaving a crater in the sidewalk and injuring civilians”.
