At least one person, an Indian national, was killed and up to four others were injured on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, after debris from alleged Iranian missiles which were intercepted fell on the Reema Plastic Products Factory and a residential area in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
According to the post on the official X account of the Ministry of Defense of Saudi Arabia, @modgovksa, the official spokesperson for the Ministry of Defense said: “Four ballistic missiles launched towards the city of Riyadh were intercepted and destroyed. Debris from the interception fell on various areas in the capital, and initial estimates indicate no damage or injuries.”
However, later on the evening of March 18, Saudi Civil Defense reported that “four Asian residents were injured and there was limited material damage as a result of shrapnel falling on a residential site in Riyadh after a ballistic missile was intercepted.”
Days later, on March 20th, the @IndianEmbRiyadh (Embassy of India) announced the “tragic demise of an Indian national in Riyadh due to recent events on March 18th.” None of the sources which mention injuries also mention any deaths, therefore it is unclear if one of the four injured later died from their injuries or if this is a fifth casualty. Therefore, an injury range of three to four has been recorded to account for this uncertainty.
The New Indian Express reported that 26-year-old Ravi Gopal, a resident of Uttar Pradesh’s Sitapur district, had been killed in the attack on Riyadh. Ravi had been reportedly working as a driver in a plastic factory in Saudi Arabia for a year prior to his death and his body was bought back to his home village of Baghain to be mourned by family members and community members, including his wife Ritu, his four-year-old son, and his parents. Ritu was described as inconsolable in the aftermath of her loss and Ravi’s elder brother, Manmohan Dayal, told news agency PTI (and was quoted by the New Indian Express as saying) that the family was experiencing severe financial hardship.
Indian Express provided additional details that Ravi had been at the factory that he worked at when he was killed and according to his family, they were able to identify his burnt remains by the blue pants that he had on during his last video call with his wife and “a patch of white hair at the back of his head.” The evening that he was killed, Ravi and a few others had remained at the factory working while most of the workers had left for evening prayers. ETV Bharat specified that the victim had been working in the loading and unloading operations at the Reema Plastic Products Factory when he was killed.
According to ETV Bharat, politicians in the Indian government visited the Ravi’s family members and offered financial assistance, including the cost of his son’s education, in assistance.
Ritu, Ravi’s wife, told PTI that they had last spoken around 9:30pm and said: “The call got disconnected after about 20 minutes, and when we tried calling back, we found the phone switched off. We also tried contacting his friends there, but could not reach anyone.” Ravi’s family was told about his friend Ram Niwas, who was also from Uttar Pradesh, and Ravi’s brother also told PTI that: “He was taken to a hospital where doctors declared him dead. Ram Niwas identified the body.”
Alghad TV reported that “Explosions rocked the Saudi capital, Riyadh, following an Iranian attack that sparked a fire and sent plumes of smoke into the air.” This is the only available source that explicitly attributed the attack to Iran.
Videos filmed from a distance showed multiple blasts lighting up the Riyadh skyline, with thick plumes of smoke rising in the aftermath. Alghad TV reported that the explosions rocked the capital and sparked a fire. According to Xinhua, “several explosions were heard across the city, and mobile phone alerts were triggered for the first time for residents in the Saudi capital’s urban area since the current regional conflict began.”
The strike status of the incident has been recorded as “contested” because while only one source attributed the original attack to Iran, the Ministry of Defence of Saudi Arabia acknowledged that the missiles had been intercepted, without saying who was responsible for the interception.
