An alleged Iranian drone strike in Kuwait during the morning of Thursday, 30 July 2026 killed 44-year-old Som Kumar Tamang.
Som Kumar, a Nepali worker, was originally from Ratuwamai Municipality-9 in Morang. While a statement from the @KuwaitArmyGHQ alleged that Som Kumar had been killed when “a building belonging to a Chinese company in the north of the country” was struck, an article from Online Khabar News reported that he was in a vehicle that was struck by a drone.
Som’s father, Bikash, had desperately called multiple people in Kuwait - from friends to the Embassy - to confirm his son’s death. “It was only after verifying everything repeatedly,” a relative, Tika, said, “that we learned it was true.”
Som had immigrated to Kuwait with “the dream of improving his family’s financial situation.” He was employed as a driver, and was working at the time of his death. The Nepali Embassy stated that he “died on the spot.”
Som’s body was sent to Nepal two days after his death, and arrived on Sunday afternoon; funeral rites were performed that day. According to Online Khabar News, “his body was brought home on Sunday afternoon. As it lay in the courtyard, family members broke down in tears. His 92-year-old, frail father tried to touch his son’s face one last time. His wife’s weeping would not stop. His two children stared in silence at the father who would never return.” His body was subsequently brought to the nearby river for cremation. It was raining during the ceremony, Tika recalled. “It was pouring heavily as we carried the body to the river for the cremation; we performed the last rites in the rain.” The family was devastated, with Tika saying, "Who will now make up for his absence in this household? There’s a 92-year-old father at home, a frail aunt, young children; a huge thunderbolt has struck this family.”
Photographs shared by Facebook user “We are proud to be Nepali - nepal” showed the family, in tears, receiving Som’s body. Sanjeev Dhakal shared a photo of a smiling Som, with a condolence post.
Where sources identified a belligerent, all pointed to the Iranian military.
