Airwars Assessment

Last Updated: 17 August 2026

In the early hours of Wednesday, October 25, 2023, an Israeli airstrike allegedly hit the home of 42-year-old Al-Aqsa Media Network journalist Saed Samir Mahmoud al-Halabi, killing him and at least 20 members of his family, including five women and six children, injuring up to 19 civilians, including an infant, and reducing his family home to rubble. The reported attack took place on Al-Hoja Street in the Al-Halabi area of the Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza.

The alleged airstrike was initially reported on X by the Palestine Dialogue Network (@paldf), which stated that two people, including a child, were killed, and 17 others were admitted to hospitals in northern Gaza with injuries. The Shehab Agency (@ShehabAgency) would later set the toll to five deaths and 19 injured, although it remains unclear how many of these injuries ultimately resulted in fatalities. Hours later, the same source confirmed the death of a “colleague in Al-Aqsa Media Network”, Saed al-Halabi.

Taking into account messages from relatives and friends of the victims posted on social media, Airwars estimated a death toll of at least 20.  Although it has not been possible to identify all the victims, videos and photos from that day showed the bodies of at least two deceased children, along with two others who appeared to be in critical condition, including a baby.

The journalist Saed Samir Mahmoud al-Halabi (Abu Abdul Rahman) was killed along with his infant granddaughter, Musk Abdul Hai Sami al-Halabi, a daughter of Abdul Hai (Abu Anas) al-Halabi.

Saed Al-Halabi’s uncle, 57-year-old Tayseer Mahmoud Halil al-Halabi (Abu Mahmoud), was killed along with his four sons, 30-year-old Muhammad Tayseer Mahmoud al-Halabi, 27-year-old Ahmed Tayseer Mahmoud al-Halabi, 22-year-old Abdul Qadir Tayseer Mahmoud al-Halabi and 32-year-old Mahmoud Tayseer Mahmoud al-Halabi (Abu Anas).

Muhammad’s wife Ala’a Al-Madhoun, their seven-year-old son Anas Mahmoud Tayseer al-Halabi, and 11-year-old daughter Aseel Mahmoud Tayseer al-Halabi were also killed.

According to the post by Ahmed Samir al-Halabi, Abdul Qadir’s wife, his two sons and a daughter were injured.

Saed al-Halabi’s aunt, 55-year-old Souad Taufiq Taha al-Halabi (Umm Muhammad), was killed along with her eldest son, 31-year-old Muhammad Sami Mahmoud al-Halabi, her daughter-in-law, Amal al-Safadi (possibly 30-year-old Amal Khader al-Halabi) and their three daughters – eight-year-old daughter Suad Muhammad Sami al-Halabi, six-year-old Joarie Muhammad Sami al-Halabi and seven-year-old Nagam Muhammad Sami al-Halabi.

According to the Facebook post by Esraa S Elhalabi, Souad al-Halabi’s daughter and sister of Muhammad, Asma Sami al-Halabi was also allegedly killed along with her adult daughter Yara al-Safadi and her infant niece Musk al-Halabi.

Where possible, the ages of victims have been found by cross-checking names against lists of fatalities shared online by Shireen Monitor, an organisation that has a list of “Martyrs of Palestine” from 2023 onward.

Airwars researchers found one further name of a civilian that may have been killed in this incident in the records of Shireen Monitor: 30-year-old Alaa Mohammed Mahmoud al-Halabi was reported as killed on 25/10/2023. While they are from the same family as the victims, it was not explicitly mentioned anywhere that they were killed in this strike. The location mentioned was not specific enough to allow Airwars to confidently link the name to this incident, and as such they will not be included in the victims list, though this will be updated should more information emerge.

Shortly after the alleged attack, several press organizations, including the Shehab Agency, Nabd and Al Aqsa Radio, expressed their condolences over the death of Saed al-Halabi, some noting that other journalists were also killed that same day. According to the International Federation of Journalists, independent journalist Salma Mukhayam was killed on the 25th of October, along with Al Aqsa TV journalist Ahmed Abu Mahadi and Zaher al-Afghani, who worked for the Mithaq Media Network. This source alerted that by that time, 21 journalists and media workers had been killed in Gaza. The IFJ has since set this toll at at least 152.

On November 7th, UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay “deplored” the death of Saed al-Halabi and called for a “full, independent investigation into the circumstances” of the journalist’s death as well as the “respect of UN Security Council Resolution 2222/2015 on the protection of journalists, media professionals and associated personnel as civilians in situations of conflict”.

Relatives of the victims expressed their condolences on several Facebook posts. “I console myself with the martyrdom of most of my family as a result of the bombing of the house on their heads while they were sleeping”, wrote Esraa S Elhalabi, who went on with a farewell message for 17 of her loved ones, including her mother, Souad al-Halabi, her brother, Muhammad Sami al-Halabi and sister Asma Sami al-Halabi, her sister’s daughter and her niece. “O Lord, give me patience and strengthen my heart. I have lost my loved ones and the most precious people to my heart”, she continued, before wishing her sister, Fatima Sami, a “speedy recovery”.

Facebook user Ismail Albatrookh offered his condolences to his “lineage”, and shared photos of the bodies of his relatives, covered in white sheets. In one of the photos, the sheets were removed from the faces of two girls who appeared to be under ten years old. “We will meet in heaven”, he wrote.

In his farewell post, Ahmed Samir al-Halabi – Saed al-Halabi’s brother– posted a photo of himself in a visible state of shock, kneeling in front of the body of one of his relatives, and lamented the death of his “martyr” brother and his eldest daughter, Musk. Imad Abu Hamza also honoured his “colleague, and dear to the heart” friend, Saed Al-Halabi, by sharing a photo of Saed, with a grey polo shirt, sitting at his desk, smiling.

User Iman Abd posted a video montage of Muhammad Sami al-Halabi’s funeral, showing several deeply emotional relatives accompanying him through his last moments. Muhammad Sami’s cousin, Tawfiq Halabi, shared a photo of himself embracing Muhammad, who was wearing a white shirt and dark pants, looking proudly at the camera. In a different post, Ahed Abu Mohammed Jalhoum shared a selfie of Muhammad Sami and a photo of his cousin, Mahmoud Tayseer Al-Halabi, wearing a black cap, with a serious expression. “The heart is squeezed with sadness”, he lamented.

According to his Facebook profile, Muhammad Sami al-Halabi studied at the Ummah Open Education University. His classmate Ahmed al-Sidawi praised him for being a “polite friend” and a “professional” writer. Amal al-Safadi, Muhammad Sami’s wife, had just announced their marriage on her Facebook page on September 2nd, 2023.

In a farewell post, Ahmed Daher expressed profound sorrow over the death of his “beloved” friend, Mahmoud Tayseer al-Halabi. “Oh, my heart, how much you can bear,” he wrote, accompanying his words with a photo collage featuring his friend, a person waving a Palestinian flag, and the Dome of the Rock. “Who will go with me to the sea?”, he asked with grief.

Anas Abdel Moneim Abu Zant wrote a deeply felt condolence message for Muhammad Tayseer al-Halabi, a “good-natured, cheerful young man”. According to him, Muhammad Tayseer, who was a member of the Al-Weam Charitable Society, died “while performing his charitable and relief duty in distributing aid to those affected by the brutal, cowardly aggression”. In the post, Muhammad Tayseer can be seen with a bright smile, wearing a blue sweatshirt over a purple sweater. Al-Khalot Abu Muhammad also honoured his “beloved friend” and “gallant neighbour” Muhammad Tayseer. “We are saddened by your passing”, he posted.

Facebook user Khaled Al Aloul mourned the loss of some members of Al-Halabi’s family, including Tayseer Mahmoud Halil al-Halabi and his children and posted an image of the completely destroyed building with dozens of men standing amidst debris and rubble.

Where possible, the names of the victims have been also matched with the Palestinian Ministry of Health (MoH) lists, which include national ID numbers. Since October 26, 2023, the MoH has released six lists, along with an additional list of medical professionals, which was released on September 17, 2024. Airwars matches individuals to the first list where their names appeared. In regard to this incident, names are matched to the first “Palestinian Ministry of Health List of Fatalities in Gaza”, which was released on October 26, 2023.

Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to the Israeli military.

Amal Aziz, 39, a widow and mother of three, a resident of Jabalia refugee camp, spoke about her niece, who was left alone with severe injuries after her entire family was killed in the bombing, and about the suffering of displacement. At the beginning of the war, I stayed in my house in the Al-Alami area of Jabalia refugee camp with my three children, Bakr (16), Hala (14), and Asma (11). My family had been living in another area of Jabalia refugee camp. Like all residents of the Gaza Strip, I was surprised by the rocket fire on Israeli settlements on October 7, 2023. Immediately after that, the war broke out, and the Gaza Strip became a war zone. Danger was everywhere. Every day, we heard about houses being bombed or threatened with bombing by the army. On October 20, 2023, they threatened to bomb the Al-Ajrami family home, which is next to the building where my brothers and uncles live. My brothers and their families moved out of the building. My brother Amin's family was scattered. His wife, Asmaa al-Halabi (28 years old), moved with their children: Dima (11 years old), Dana (5 years old), Tala (4 years old), Abdul Nour (2.5 years old), and Kinan (9 months old), to her parents' apartment in a three-story building not far from my brothers' building. Amin stayed behind to sleep at his workplace, where he worked as a guard at Kamal Adwan Hospital. On October 23, 2023, at approximately 2:00 AM, I suddenly heard heavy shelling. I followed the news and a few minutes later saw a report about the bombing of the al-Halabi family's house. I immediately called my brother Amin, who was working at Kamal Adwan Hospital at the time. He answered, weeping, and told me that his daughter Tala had been brought to the hospital and had died. Despite the dangerous situation, I immediately walked to Kamal Adwan Hospital. I called my brothers and told them about the bombing. They went to the Halabi family home and confirmed that it had been bombed and completely destroyed. I stayed at the hospital with Amin, and my other brothers went to the Halabi family home to help recover the bodies. Bodies began arriving at the hospital, some of them mangled. My brother's wife, Asma, and my nephews Dana, Tala, Abdul Nour, and Kinan were among the dead. While they were recovering the bodies, the rescuers, including members of the Civil Defense, heard Dima calling from under the rubble, "I'm here! I'm alive!" They worked for seven hours to lift the rubble off her and rescue her. At the hospital, I tried to calm Amin, who was in a very distressed state. When they finally managed to rescue Dima, she arrived at the hospital with serious injuries. They immediately took her into surgery and then transferred her to the intensive care unit after the operation. In addition to the family members, there were 50 other displaced people sheltering in the Halabi family building. Thirty people who were in this building were killed, and 20 others were injured, some seriously. After burying Amin's wife and their four children, we took Dima to Al-Shifa Hospital for further treatment, where she underwent several more surgeries. She had fractures in both legs, burns, a head injury and burns, and other injuries to her tendons and nerves. On October 25, 2023, the Israeli army bombed the Al-Taj building in the Al-Rimal neighborhood, and many victims were evacuated to the hospital. They asked us to take Dima out to make room. We took Dima to our home in the Jabalia refugee camp. The journey home was very difficult for her, as we had to carry her on foot. She was still in critical condition, in pain, frightened, and traumatized. Two days after we arrived home, I realized that Dima needed to be taken back to the hospital. I asked Kamal Adwan Hospital to send an ambulance and accompanied her. They ran tests and discovered she had kidney and liver problems. They began treating her, and she was hospitalized for 45 days. Her father, Ayman, and I stayed with her the whole time, while my children remained at home. Then, the Israeli army stormed Jabalia and threatened to storm the hospital. We had to take Dima out and bring her back to my house. The situation in the area became extremely difficult. Many residents were displaced, the streets were deserted, and we were left alone, isolated in the house. Dima was in a lot of pain. I stayed by her side, taking care of her the entire time. I, too, had to go out to find food and travel far to get a can of tuna, a can of meat, or drinking water. After that, we took Dima to the hospital, where they removed the casts from her legs. I managed to find a physical therapist to work with her, as I was afraid she would remain immobile. Because of Dima's condition—she couldn't walk due to fractures and burns and needed diapers—we stayed at home and couldn't move south. I wanted to stay with her close to the hospital and the physical therapist. We remained in this desperate situation for about six months, until the situation in the area became even more dangerous and tanks approached our house. On May 2, 2024, we were forced to flee. I left with my brother Amin and the children. We put Dima in a small cart, and Bakr pushed her. We walked to the Shati refugee camp, where we found shelter in a warehouse. We are still living there in very difficult conditions. We could barely afford food or water. I personally gave Dima her physical therapy exercises. I talked to her constantly, trying to ease her suffering and support her. She was in pain and anxious, and she missed her mother and siblings terribly. Whenever the situation allowed, Amin would occasionally go north to Kamal Adwan Hospital to work. On October 2, 2024, he went there and met our brothers, Muhammad and Ayman. He planned to work for a week at the hospital and bring Dima's medical file, which he had left behind, and some clothes for her when he returned. I slept at my brother Mohammed's house, near my family's home. On October 9, 2024, at approximately 1:00 PM, the Israelis bombed the Abu Nasr building in the Jabalia refugee camp, near my brothers' building. Mohammed, Ayman, and Amin were near the building with my aunt Sanaa (48 years old), her son Abdullah (20 years old), and a few other members of the Shubeir family. They were all trying to gather their belongings in preparation for fleeing south. But before they could leave, the building was bombed. My brother Mohammed called and told me, weeping, that Amin had been killed, while he and Ayman were injured and taken to the hospital. My aunt Sanaa and her son Abdullah were also killed. Dima received the news of her father's death with great difficulty. She reacted hysterically, crying and beating her legs until they bled. My brother Amin's body remained under the rubble until January 2025. Until then, my brothers and neighbors had been removing some of the rubble by hand, gradually, day by day, until they uncovered his body and brought it for burial. Now, everything Dima had in this world is buried underground—her family, her memories, her dreams, and her hopes. Dima still suffers greatly from her tendon and nerve injuries. She is unable to walk and relies on others for assistance. She receives physical therapy and continues to treat the wounds on her legs. She needs various surgeries, including cosmetic and hair transplant procedures, as she lost her hair due to burns on her head. She has endured so much from her injuries and the loss of her entire family, from painful treatments without anesthesia to displacement and bombing. Dima needs treatments that can only be obtained outside the Gaza Strip. This is her only hope of returning to being a child like all other children. She has lost so much and deserves to recover. She is a bright and talented child and was an excellent student. She loves writing poetry, and despite everything she has been through, she still has dreams. Dima Abu Ashkian recounted in her testimony: “When they bombed my grandfather’s house, I woke up to a loud noise and saw a red light, then it disappeared. I couldn’t feel my body. I thought I was dreaming.” I tried to move, but I couldn't. I was under the rubble. Suddenly, a light appeared. I was hungry, thirsty, and scared. I screamed, "Save me! Help me! Help me!" Then I heard someone trying to push the rubble off me, but I couldn't see anyone. I tried to move, but I couldn't. A long time passed while I was under the rubble. It was pitch black, and I felt like I was suffocating. I heard hammering on the rubble, but when I looked around, I couldn't see anything. I banged on the rubble with my hands so they would hear me, until someone caught me and said, "Don't be afraid. Don't be afraid. We're here to save you." Then I lost consciousness. After that, I heard someone talking, and I felt them lift me up. They ran with me to an ambulance. When I opened my eyes, I found myself lying on a hospital bed. My body was completely wrapped in bandages, and doctors were treating my head. I was in excruciating pain in my head and legs, and I was suffering a lot. Just a few days later, my aunt Amal told me that my mother and brothers were no longer alive. That they had been killed. Since then, I've been crying for them all the time. The day my father was also killed, my aunt Amal received a phone call and started crying. When I asked her, "What happened?" she said that my uncles Mohammed and Ayman had been injured. Later, she told me that my father, Amin, had been killed. I cried for him a lot. My father was all I had left of my family, and I had pinned all my hopes on him. He was my support. Now that he's gone, I have no one left except my aunt Amal. I cry all the time, and I can't comprehend that I've lost him too. I'm still in shock. No one from my family is left alive, and now only my aunt Amal cares for me, looks after me, helps me, and comforts me. She is my family now. I miss my family members terribly. A deep wound has opened in my soul, and it can't be healed. After losing my father as well, my life was completely shattered. All that was left for me.* These two testimonies were recorded by B'Tselem field researcher Muhammad Sabah on October 19, 2025.** On November 5, 2025, Amal managed to leave the Gaza Strip, along with Dima, Asma, and Hala, and travel to Italy, where Dima is receiving medical treatment. Asma's eldest son, Bakr, was not permitted to enter Jordan and was forced to return to the northern Gaza Strip, where he now lives with the rest of Amal's family.
