Bahaa al-Din Yassin, a volunteer journalist with Watan News Agency and Al-Quds News Network, was killed on Friday, May 10, 2024, by a missile fired from an Israeli reconnaissance aircraft near his home in the Zeitoun neighborhood, southeast of Gaza City. His brother, Mohammed, told Sky News Arabia: “On Friday afternoon, the Israeli occupation army raided areas in the Zeitoun neighborhood. Bahaa went out to cover the events and send some video footage from a location with a strong internet connection. He was targeted by a missile from an Israeli reconnaissance aircraft and was killed instantly.”

Abu Al-Saud told CPJ that on the day of the attack, as every day, they were driving a car with the word “Press” clearly written on it. “As soon as I arrived and got out of the car, Tariq was still finding a place to park it, when an Israeli drone struck him with a missile, and he was martyred immediately,” he said. Abu Al-Saud accused Israeli forces of “deliberately targeting the car because it belonged to journalists.”. Tariq’s father, Muhammad Al-Maidna, told CPJ: “We live in the al-Tuffah neighborhood northeast of Gaza City, and we were displaced from our home more than ten times because of the danger of the location. He said that because his son was busy covering the war “we used to see him once a week, so we only saw him two days before his martyrdom.” He explained that Tariq, the second son of the family to be killed during the war, had only finished high school, but his passion for photography pushed him to learn it. “He did not learn photography at university, but in practice. He originally worked as a wedding photographer, and from the beginning of the war he began working as a freelance news cameraman to document the events,” Muhammad Al-Maidna said. CPJ emailed the North America Desk for the Israel Defense Forces for comment but didn’t immediately receive a response.

Bahaaddine Yassine, a 22-year-old volunteer Palestinian reporter for the privately owned local social media-based news outlets Watan Media Agency and Al-Quds News Network, was killed in an Israeli airstrike on Al-Zeitoun neighborhood, southeast of Gaza City, on May 10, 2024, while reporting on Israeli strikes on the area, according to SKeyes, his brother, and his employer. Bahaaddine Yassine’s brother, Mohammed Yassine, told CPJ by phone that Bahaaddine had been filming an Israeli raid of the area around. 4.30 p.m. when he was hit by a missile from an Israeli plane. Mohammed Yassine said his brother had previously been injured by shrapnel from an Israeli tank on November 15, 2023.  Youssef al-Firani, general manager of the Watan Media Agency and the executive director of the Al-Quds News Network – both of which primarily use WhatsApp and Telegram to distribute news – told CPJ by phone that Yassine was killed while preparing videos and news materials. Al-Firani said their last communication had been two days before his death, “when he was suggesting some on-the-ground stories, and he was supposed to deliver them on the day of his death.” Al-Firani added: “Bahaa started working with us in August 2022. He was well-mannered and one of the kindest people we have known, and everyone who knew him loved him.” CPJ emailed the Israel Defense Forces’ North America Media Desk in late September 2024, asking for comment on the killing of Yassine. In an exchange that followed, the IDF asked CPJ for the journalists’ IDs and "relevant coordinates," which CPJ explained it could not provide due to research limitations. The IDF then said it could not fully address CPJ’s inquiry due to a lack of "sufficient details." The IDF said it takes "all operationally feasible measures" to prevent harm to journalists and other civilians, asserting that "many" on CPJ’s list were Hamas members and therefore lawful targets, but did not name the journalists or provide evidence they were Hamas fighters.

Mahdi Al-Mamluk, a Palestinian external broadcast engineer for the Islamic Jihad-affiliated Al-Quds Al-Youm TV, was killed in an Israeli airstrike west of Gaza City on November 11, 2024, according to news reports, and his manager, who spoke to CPJ. “Mahdi lived in the Shuja’iyya neighborhood, east of Gaza City, and since the beginning of the war he had been displaced more than once,” Mohammed Al-Amsi, the channel’s external broadcast manager, told CPJ, adding that the engineer remained in Gaza City and transmitted reports about the siege of its Al-Shifa hospital while other members of staff were displaced southwards. “Mahdi was supervising coverage of the war and the people’s suffering and transmitting the images from the northern Gaza Strip. On Monday evening, he was in the vicinity of Al-Shifa Medical Complex, west of Gaza City, doing his job transmitting the situation, when he was targeted by Israeli airstrikes, and he was martyred instantly,” Al-Amsi said. CPJ’s email to the Israel Defense Forces’ North America Media Desk asking whether the military knew there was a media worker in the area it attacked and whether Al-Mamluk was targeted for his work did not immediately receive a response.
