Ayman al-Rafati (1988–2024) was a Palestinian writer and journalist specializing in Israeli affairs. Born in Gaza City,[1] he earned a bachelor's degree in journalism and media from the Islamic University, a master's degree in political science from the same university, and a doctorate in political science and international relations from the Lebanese University. Ayman worked as a journalist for Quds Press International from 2010 to 2014 and as an editor for Ma'an News Agency in 2008. He also served on the board of directors of the Center for Regional Studies from 2017.[2][3] He, his wife, his children, his brother, and his brother's wife were killed on Wednesday, February 14, 2024, in an Israeli airstrike on his home on al-Jalaa Street in Gaza City, during the Israeli response to Operation al-Aqsa Flood.

أيمن الرفاتي (1988-2024) هو كاتب وصحفي فلسطيني مختص بالشأن الإسرائيلي، ولد في مدينة غزة،[1] نال درجة البكالوريوس في الصحافة والإعلام من الجامعة الاسلامية، والماجستير في العلوم السياسية من ذات الجامعة، وحاز على شهادة الدكتوراة في العلوم السياسية والعلاقات الدولية من جامعة لبنان. عمل أيمن مراسلاً صحفياً في وكالة قدس برس انترناشونال خلال الفترة (2010-2014) ومحرر صحفي في وكالة معاً خلال العام 2008، كما شغل منصب عضو مجلس إدارة مركز الدراسات الإقليمية منذ عام 2017.[2][3] اغتيل هو وزوجته وأبنائه وأخيه وزوجته يوم الأربعاء 14 فبراير 2024 خلال ضربةٍ جوية نفذتها القوات الجوية الإسرائيلية على منزله في شارع الجلاء في مدينة غزة، وذلك خلال الرد الإسرائيلي على عملية طوفان الأقصى.

Al-Rafati was born in Gaza in 1988. He studied journalism and media at the Islamic University before pursuing postgraduate studies in political science, earning both a master's degree and a doctorate in political science and international relations. Throughout his career, Al-Rafati worked as a journalist and editor with several local media outlets, including the Ma'an News Agency. He became known as one of the most prominent writers and political analysts, and his voice was heard on numerous media platforms. His writings focused on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and human rights issues in Palestine. Abu Al-Saud accused Israeli forces of “deliberately targeting the car because it belonged to journalists.”. Tariq’s father, Muhammad Al-Maidna, told CPJ: “We live in the al-Tuffah neighborhood northeast of Gaza City, and we were displaced from our home more than ten times because of the danger of the location. He said that because his son was busy covering the war “we used to see him once a week, so we only saw him two days before his martyrdom.” He explained that Tariq, the second son of the family to be killed during the war, had only finished high school, but his passion for photography pushed him to learn it. “He did not learn photography at university, but in practice. He originally worked as a wedding photographer, and from the beginning of the war he began working as a freelance news cameraman to document the events,” Muhammad Al-Maidna said. CPJ emailed the North America Desk for the Israel Defense Forces for comment but didn’t immediately receive a response.

The martyrdom of the writer and political analyst, Ayman al-Rafati, and five members of his family—three children (his nephews, Maryam, Anas, and Abdullah) and their mother, his brother's wife—before noon today, Wednesday, in a Nazi bombing that targeted their home on al-Jalaa Street in Gaza City. They are not just numbers. A young man worthy of life, just as Palestine and Gaza were worthy of him. The martyr, Dr. al-Rafati, a member of the board of directors of the Regional Studies Center in Palestine, was a journalist and researcher who followed Israeli affairs. He gave dozens of interviews on various Arab channels, the content of which was a source of concern for the Nazi Zionist establishment, thus placing him on the list of targets of the Nazi criminal mentality.

Two Palestinian journalists were also killed earlier on Monday in the Israeli bombardment. Alaa Taher Al-Hasanat was killed during a strike on his home in Gaza City and Ayat al-Khadura was killed in a strike on  Beit Lahia in the northern Gaza Strip, according to Palestinian news agency Wafa.

His martyrdom underscores the risks faced by journalists in resisting Israeli oppression, inspiring a new wave of fearless journalism. In mid-February, he was killed during an Israeli occupation raid in Gaza City. And yet, his brand of journalism is a stellar example for all those who will unquestionably follow through on his work on Palestine. Ayman, one of countless journalistic voices that refused to cower before Zionist oppression, succeeded in accomplishing the noblest of outcomes: speaking Palestine’s truth to power. “On the international horizon, the occupation forces have exposed their own immorality and have been globally recognized as a criminal unethical army that resonates with Nazism, one that is carrying out the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in Gaza, and is being tried at the International Court of Justice for its crimes against humanity,” wrote Ayman shortly before his martyrdom. Sheer bravery of character – shared by many of Ayman’s martyred counterparts – contributed to a trail of powerful, dedicated and courageous journalistic work amid "Israel’s" Gaza genocide. First, Ayman’s martyrdom underscores the dire circumstances faced by journalists in Palestine and the pains they take to challenge Israeli propaganda on actual suffering, self-determination and the state of the resistance. After all, the brutal occupation army is responsible for a massive spike in killings of journalists, mistaking such cowardice as a way of shutting down critical scrutiny. As the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) recently made clear, seventy-two of the 99 journalists killed worldwide in 2023 were Palestinians reporting on "Israel’s" war on Gaza. Ayman braved the same vicious circumstances, despite the knowledge that any moment of writing on Palestine could cost him his life. Still, to put fact before life is an exercise in freedom fighting.

Mahdi Al-Mamluk, a Palestinian external broadcast engineer for the Islamic Jihad-affiliated Al-Quds Al-Youm TV, was killed in an Israeli airstrike west of Gaza City on November 11, 2024, according to news reports, and his manager, who spoke to CPJ. “Mahdi lived in the Shuja’iyya neighborhood, east of Gaza City, and since the beginning of the war he had been displaced more than once,” Mohammed Al-Amsi, the channel’s external broadcast manager, told CPJ, adding that the engineer remained in Gaza City and transmitted reports about the siege of its Al-Shifa hospital while other members of staff were displaced southwards. “Mahdi was supervising coverage of the war and the people’s suffering and transmitting the images from the northern Gaza Strip. On Monday evening, he was in the vicinity of Al-Shifa Medical Complex, west of Gaza City, doing his job transmitting the situation, when he was targeted by Israeli airstrikes, and he was martyred instantly,” Al-Amsi said. CPJ’s email to the Israel Defense Forces’ North America Media Desk asking whether the military knew there was a media worker in the area it attacked and whether Al-Mamluk was targeted for his work did not immediately receive a response.
