Saturday 24 June – Typhoons eliminated a sniper team in Raqqa…In similar fashion, a pair of Paveway IV-armed Tornados eliminated a terrorist sniper team in Raqqa on Saturday 24 June.

On 24 Jun, Australian F/A-18 Hornets supported Iraqi forces during operations in Mosul. The Australian aircraft struck five Daesh fighting positions with guided munitions over several hours of support.

On June 23, Coalition military forces conducted 34 strikes consisting of 85 engagements against ISIS terrorists in Syria and Iraq.

In Syria, Coalition military forces conducted 31 strikes consisting of 43 engagements against ISIS targets.

* Near Abu Kamal, six strikes destroyed 10 ISIS oil storage tanks, four front-end loaders, two vehicles, a VBIED facility and a pump jack.

On 23 Jun, Australian F/A-18 Hornets conducted a strike operation in the Middle Euphrates River Valley, Syria. The Australian aircraft struck a Daesh weapons cache with guided munitions.

On 23 Jun, Australian F/A-18 Hornets supported Iraqi forces during operations in Mosul. The Australian aircraft struck five Daesh fighting positions and a Daesh heavy weapons site with guided munitions over several hours of support.

Friday 23 June – Tornados and Typhoons hit three Daesh sniper teams in Mosul, and a truck-bomb and armoured personnel carrier in Raqqa…The next day [June 23rd], a mixed Tornado and Typhoon pair used two Paveway IVs to target successfully a large group of Daesh fighters operating with a truck-bomb and an armoured personnel carrier in Raqqa, while in Mosul a Tornado flight conducted three precision attacks with Brimstone missiles on sniper positions.

On June 22, Coalition military forces conducted 32 strikes consisting of 103 engagements against ISIS terrorists in Syria and Iraq.

In Syria, Coalition military forces conducted 28 strikes consisting of 49 engagements against ISIS targets.

* Near Abu Kamal, seven strikes engaged two ISIS tactical units and destroyed nine ISIS oil stills, four dump trucks, three cement mixers, three vehicles, three tactical vehicles, two cranes, a weapons cache, a pump jack, and a manifold.

Thursday 22 June – Tornados and Typhoons engaged six terrorist positions in Mosul, including four defended by machine-gun teams…On Thursday 22 June, Tornados and Typhoons conducted attacks with Paveway IVs against six Daesh targets in western Mosul, with some strikes being called in by Iraqi forces positioned extremely close to the terrorist locations. Four machine-gun teams were amongst the threats successfully dealt with by our aircraft.

On June 21, Coalition military forces conducted 20 strikes consisting of 112 engagements against ISIS terrorists in Syria and Iraq.

In Syria, Coalition military forces conducted 14 strikes consisting of 26 engagements against ISIS targets.

* Near Raqqah, 14 strikes [1 British] engaged 14 ISIS tactical units and destroyed 16 fighting positions, three vehicles and an ammunition cache.

In Iraq, Coalition military forces conducted six strikes consisting of 86 engagements against ISIS targets.

* Near Bayji, one strike engaged an ISIS tactical unit and destroyed a vehicle.

Historic Mosque destroyed by ISIS

MOSUL, Iraq – The government of Iraq announced the destruction of the Great Mosque of al-Nuri in western Mosul, by ISIS terrorists, June 21.

The mosque was well known as the place where ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi made his infamous speech July 4, 2014.

The mosque had stood in Mosul for over eight centuries, and its famous leaning minaret earned the city of Mosul the nickname “the hunchback.”

The Coalition is working by, with, and through the government of Iraq to defeat ISIS in Mosul and throughout Iraq. The Coalition contributes to the defeat of ISIS by providing the Iraqi forces with equipment, training, intelligence and surveillance, precision fire support and military advice to leaders. The Coalition has enabled the Iraqi Security Forces to reclaim over 47,000 square kilometers of their land from ISIS for the people of Iraq.

“As our Iraqi Security Force partners closed in on the al-Nuri mosque, ISIS destroyed one of Mosul and Iraq’s great treasures,” said Maj. Gen. Joseph Martin, Commanding General of Combined Joint Forces Land Component Command-Operation Inherent Resolve.

“This is a crime against the people of Mosul and all of Iraq, and is an example of why this brutal organization must be annihilated,” said Martin. “The responsibility of this devastation is laid firmly at the doorstep of ISIS, and we continue to support our Iraqi partners as they bring these terrorists to justice. However, the battle for the liberation of Mosul is not yet complete, and we remain focused on supporting the ISF with that objective in mind.”

CJFLCC-OIR is the ground forces command in Iraq that supports the Combined Joint Task Force-Operation Inherent Resolve’s ongoing multi-national Coalition mission to defeat ISIS in Iraq.

Wednesday 21 June – Typhoons struck two Daesh-held buildings in Raqqa, while Tornados and Typhoons destroyed a car-bomb, and four terrorist strongpoints in Mosul…On Wednesday 21 June, a pair of Typhoons assisted Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in Raqqa. Two buildings held by extremist fighters were hit with Paveway IVs. In Mosul, a Tornado flight used a Brimstone missile to destroy safely a car-bomb spotted by the Iraqi ground forces. The Tornado flight then used a Paveway IV to eliminate a medium machine-gun team. A mixed Tornado and Typhoon pair were also active that day over the city. A Brimstone attack was directed at a mortar position, while Paveways were used against three Daesh strongpoints, including two housing machine-guns.

Avec l’avancée des lignes de front, l’activité de de la Task Force (TF) Wagram est particulièrement marquée par la défense des zones arrière des Forces de sécurité irakiennes (FSI) face aux actions de harcèlement du groupe terroriste. Daech cherche ainsi à desserrer l’étau qui fait pression sur ses combattants, acculés dans la ville de Mossoul. Les artilleurs français ont ainsi poursuivi leurs missions d’appui de la 15e division irakienne en charge la sécurisation des abords Nord-Ouest de la ville de Mossoul.
Chammal : la Task Force Wagram adapte ses feux

Les missions de tir sont fréquentes et correspondent toutes à des demandes des forces irakiennes engagées au sol pour les appuyer dans leur combat quotidien. La TF Wagram fournit ainsi aux FSI des tirs d’appui lors de la progression de la 15e division vers l’ouest de Mossoul, de sécurisation des terrains récemment conquis et de protection des lignes irakiennes les plus avancées.

Le 1er juin, la TF Wagram a effectué des tirs sur des positions ennemies menaçant, par le biais de tirs de mortiers, de prendre à partie les unités irakiennes au sol. Ce tir de « contre-batterie » a eu pour résultat la destruction de la position défensive des terroristes ainsi qu’un poste de commandement. Pour garantir un emploi de la force adapté aux contraintes d’environnement et répondant aux besoins des forces appuyées, les artilleurs français disposent d’un panel diversifié de munitions qui offre des choix techniques et permet ainsi d’adapter l’effet tactique souhaité sur le terrain.

Le 4 juin, lors d’une demande d’appui formulée par une unité irakienne harcelée par un mortier, les officiers en charge de la vérification des tirs demandés ont opté, en concertation avec le commandant d’unité responsable du contrôle national, pour des tirs de semonce plutôt qu’un tir de destruction sur une pièce d’artillerie en raison de la présence de la population civile non loin du mortier visé. Sur le terrain, la solution a permis de faire cesser les tirs qui menaçaient les troupes irakiennes tout en protégeant les populations qui auraient pu être touchées par un tir à détruire.

L’artillerie française est un levier d’action tactique intégrée à la composante terrestre de la coalition, se réarticulant et adaptant ses feux en cohérence avec l’avance des forces irakiennes et conformément aux règles de contrôle national.

Lancée depuis le 19 septembre 2014, l’opération Chammal est le volet français de l’Operation Inherent Resolve (OIR). Il mobilise aujourd’hui près de 1 200 militaires. A la demande du gouvernement irakien et en coordination avec les alliés de la France présents dans la région, l’opération Chammal repose sur deux piliers complémentaires : un pilier « formation », au profit d’unités de sécurité nationales irakiennes (Task Force Narvik et Monsabert) et un pilier « appui », consistant à soutenir l’action des forces locales engagées au sol contre Daech et à frapper les capacités militaires du groupe terroriste par l’action combinée des moyens aériens déployés, de la TF Wagram et des bâtiments de la marine nationale.

CHAMMAL

APPRÉCIATION DE SITUATION

En Syrie, dans le secteur de Raqqah, les Forces Démocratiques syriennes (FDS) continuent leur offensive.

Leur progression se fait selon plusieurs axes, mais c’est le long des rives de l’Euphrate à l’Est et à l’Ouest de la ville que les percées sont les plus importantes.

Après avoir concédé beaucoup de terrain les semaines précédentes la défense de Daech s’est désormais raffermie. A l’Est, les FDS ont atteint le cœur de la ville, à l’Ouest la progression est désormais difficile face à des combattants de Daech recherchant l’imbrication avec la population, et ayant recours comme à Mossoul à des actions systématiques de piégeage du terrain et de harcèlement.

En Irak, à Mossoul, le recul de Daech se poursuit.

Dans la province de Ninive, les reconquêtes de territoires vers Tal Afar par les Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) se poursuivent. Elles sont complétées par les opérations de la 15e Division pour sécuriser la zone de Kisik et les progressions vers l’ouest, préalables à la poursuite des opérations en direction de Tall Afar. Daech a concentré cette semaine ses efforts de diversion dans le secteur de Hawijah.

A Mossoul l’étau continue de se resserrer sur la médina. Cette semaine, les combats se sont poursuivis en particulier au Nord de la Médina où le complexe hospitalier, dernier bastion des djihadistes en dehors de la veille ville, fait toujours l’objet d’âpres combats. Dans les autres secteurs, Daech maintient une défense acharnée, et profite de toutes les opportunités de la zone urbaine pour mener des contre-attaques complexes et des actions de piégeage et de harcèlement.

ACTIVITÉS DE LA FORCE CHAMMAL

Appui feu – TF WagramLa Task Force (TF) Wagram a appuyé cette semaine les opérations de la 15e division irakienne. Ces opérations visaient essentiellement à sécuriser la progression des troupes irakiennes vers l’ouest dans la région entre Badush et Kisik. 17 missions de tir ont été réalisées en appui des unités irakiennes. Appui aérien au Levant

Cette semaine, les aéronefs de l’opération Chammal ont réalisé 34 sorties aériennes dont 31 de reconnaissance armée ou d’appui au sol (CAS) et 3 de recueil de renseignements.

19 frappes ont été réalisées par les avions français en Irak et en Syrie. La majeure partie d’entre elle ont été réalisées dans le cadre de la bataille de Mossoul, en appui des combattants irakiens engagés dans les combats pour chasser Daech de ses positions au Nord de la Médina.

Les autres frappes ont été réalisées en appui des combats pour la prise de Raqqah, et contre des flux d’armes et de combattants en Irak et en Syrie.

On June 20, Coalition military forces conducted 14 strikes consisting of 44 engagements against ISIS terrorists in Syria and Iraq.

In Syria, Coalition military forces conducted 12 strikes consisting of 16 engagements against ISIS targets.

* Near Raqqah, 12 strikes engaged 10 ISIS tactical units; and destroyed six fighting positons, three vehicles, three tactical vehicles, two mortar teams, a command and control node and a mortar cache.

* Near Mosul, two strikes [1 Australian] engaged two ISIS tactical units; destroyed 24 fighting positions, three vehicles, two rocket-propelled grenade systems, two medium machine guns, a recoilless rifle, a supply cache, and a heavy machine gun; and suppressed an ISIS tactical unit.

Additionally, six strikes were conducted in Syria and Iraq on June 11, June 18 and June 19 that closed within the last 24 hours.

* On June 18, near Raqqah, Syria, three strikes engaged three ISIS tactical units, destroyed eight fighting positions and a mortar system, and suppressed an ISIS tactical unit.

* On June 18, near Mosul, Iraq, two strikes engaged an ISIS tactical unit; destroyed 30 vehicles, two fighting positions, a rocket-propelled grenade system, and a medium machine gun; and damaged 18 ISIS supply routes.

Monday 19 June – Tornados and Typhoons attacked six targets in Mosul, including Daesh machine-gun and sniper teams, as well as a terrorist weapons stockpile west of Kirkuk…

The RAF is continuing to support Iraqi forces in their effort to liberate western Mosul. While the operating environment in the city is very challenging, particularly given the closely-packed buildings, very narrow streets, and the density of the urban population, our aircrew have continued to deliver precision strikes in close support of Iraqi troops on the ground. Daesh’s current tactics, including the illegal use of civilians as human shields, and fighting from sites such as schools, hospitals, religious sites and civilian neighbourhoods, increases the risk to innocent life. While no military operations come without risk, particularly in dense urban environments and against such inhuman Daesh tactics, the RAF continues to take all steps necessary to minimise civilian casualties.

Flights of Royal Air Force Tornados and Typhoons operated over northern Iraq on Monday 19 June in support of the Iraqi security forces. Our aircraft conducted attacks in Mosul with Paveway IV guided bombs against six Daesh positions which the Iraqi forces had encountered, including a group of snipers and four machine-gun teams. Thirty miles west of Kirkuk, a Daesh weapons stockpile was also destroyed by a Paveway IV.

On 19 Jun, Australian F/A-18 Hornets supported Iraqi forces during operations in Mosul. The Australian aircraft struck three Daesh fighting positions with guided munitions over several hours of support.

Coalition shoots down armed UAV in Syria

SOUTHWEST ASIA – A U.S. aircraft shot down an armed pro-Syrian regime Unmanned Aerial Vehicle advancing on Coalition forces in Southern Syria, June 20.

The armed pro-regime Shaheed-129 UAV was shot down by a U.S. F-15E Strike Eagle at approximately 12:30 a.m. after it displayed hostile intent and advanced on Coalition forces.

The Coalition forces were manning an established combat outpost to the northeast of At Tanf where they are training and advising partner ground forces in the fight against ISIS. This is the same location where another pro-regime UAV dropped munitions near Coalition forces before it was shot down, June 8.

The F-15E intercepted the armed UAV after it was observed advancing on the Coalition position. When the armed UAV continued to advance on the Coalition position without diverting its course it was shot down.

The Coalition has made it clear to all parties publically and through the de-confliction line with Russian forces that the demonstrated hostile intent and actions of pro-regime forces toward Coalition and partner forces in Syria conducting legitimate counter-ISIS operations will not be tolerated.

There is a de-confliction mechanism in place with Russian forces to reduce uncertainty in this highly contested space and mitigate the chances of strategic miscalculation. Given recent events, the Coalition will not allow pro-regime aircraft to threaten or approach in close proximity to Coalition and partnered forces.

The Coalition presence in Syria addresses the imminent threat ISIS in Syria poses globally. The Coalition does not seek to fight Syrian regime, Russian, or pro-regime forces partnered with them, but will not hesitate to defend Coalition or partner forces from any threat.

The Coalition calls on all parties to focus their efforts on the defeat of ISIS, which is our common enemy and the greatest threat to regional and worldwide peace and security.

Coalition forces killed Turki-al-Bin’ ali

SOUTHWEST ASIA – Coalition forces killed Turki al-Bin’ali, the self-proclaimed “Grand Mufti,” or chief cleric, of ISIS, in an airstrike May 31 in Mayadin, Syria.

Al-Bin’ali had a central role in recruiting foreign terrorist fighters and provoking terrorist attacks around the world. As chief cleric to ISIS since 2014, he provided propaganda to incite murder and other atrocities, attempted to legitimize the creation of the “caliphate,” and was a close confidant of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

Leveraging his self-proclaimed religious role, his propaganda writings included the call for terrorists to pledge allegiance to al-Baghdadi as “caliph.” His recruiting efforts for the terror group also included multiple recorded lectures attempting to justify and encouraging the slaughter of innocents.

Sunday 18 June – A Reaper destroyed a car-bomb and a mortar team in Raqqa, while Tornados and Typhoons engaged ten positions in Mosul…A Reaper patrolled over Raqqa on Sunday 18 June. Its crew successfully spotted a Daesh mortar team and provided targeting assistance to a coalition air strike against them. The Reaper’s crew then used Hellfire missiles to destroy a car-bomb and a second mortar team who were spotted in the act of firing at the SDF. The same day, Tornados and Typhoons were very active over Mosul. A Brimstone was used to target a group of terrorists engaged in a close-quarters firefight with Iraqi troops, while Paveways accounted for nine more targets, including two machine-gun teams, multiple snipers, and extremists armed with rocket-propelled grenades.

On 18 Jun, Australian F/A-18 Hornets supported Iraqi forces during operations in Mosul. The Australian aircraft struck seven Daesh fighting positions with guided munitions over several hours of support.

On June 17, Coalition military forces conducted 25 strikes consisting of 46 engagements against ISIS terrorists in Syria and Iraq.

Saturday 17 June – Tornados and Typhoons struck a Daesh-held building in Raqqa and six terrorist targets in Mosul…On Saturday 17 June, Tornados and Typhoons suppressed a Daesh position in Raqqa, and struck six more positions in Mosul, again using a Brimstone and Paveway IV mix to deal with snipers and a machine-gun team.
