A Bangladeshi expatriate was killed in the United Arab Emirates by shrapnel from an intercepted drone, according to the official news agency WAM, citing local authorities in the emirate of Fujairah.

The agency reported that "competent authorities in Fujairah dealt with an incident that occurred on a farm in the Al-Rifa'a area, resulting from shrapnel falling after the successful interception of a drone by air defenses," according to AFP.

WAM quoted the Fujairah government media office as saying that "the incident resulted in the death of a Bangladeshi national."

The emirate of Fujairah is located near the Strait of Hormuz, which has been the target of several attacks since Iran began launching missiles and drones daily at neighboring Gulf states in retaliation for Israeli and US strikes on its territory.

وأوردت الوكالة أن «الجهات المختصة في الفجيرة تعاملت مع حادث وقع في مزرعة في منطقة الرفاع، نتيجة سقوط شظايا إثر الاعتراض الناجح لطائرة مسيرة من قبل الدفاعات الجوية»، حسب وكالة «فرانس برس».

ونقلت «وام» عن المكتب الإعلامي لحكومة الفجيرة «أن الحادث أسفر عن مقتل شخص من الجنسية البنغلاديشية».

وتقع إمارة الفجيرة قرب مضيق هرمز الذي تعرّض لهجمات عدة منذ أن بدأت إيران تطلق يوميا صواريخ وطائرات مسيّرة على دول الخليج المجاورة لها ردا على الضربات الإسرائيلية والأميركية لأراضيها.
