في 17 يناير 2024، ارتكبت قوات الاحتلال الإسرائيلي انتهاكًا صارخًا بحق حرمة الموتى، حيث أقدمت على تجريف وتدمير مقبرة الحي النمساوي الواقعة غرب مدينة خان يونس، جنوب قطاع غزة، بالقرب من المستشفى الميداني الأردني ومجمع ناصر الطبي.
استخدمت قوات الاحتلال جرافات عسكرية لتدمير القبور وسحق شواهدها، كما قامت بنبش عدد من القبور وسرقة جثامين منها، في مشهد أثار سخطًا واسعًا بين السكان المحليين.
بررت إسرائيل هذا العمل بوجود “معلومات استخباراتية” تشير إلى احتمال وجود جثث أسرى إسرائيليين في المقبرة، زاعمة أن العملية تهدف إلى استعادة رفاتهم. إلا أن هذه الادعاءات لم تكن محل مصداقية خاصة في ظل تكرار مثل هذه الانتهاكات في مقابر أخرى بقطاع غزة.
