Palestinian Territories – The Palestinian Center for the Protection of Journalists (PJPC) condemns the assassination of journalist Hassan Majdi Abu Warda, director of the local "Barq Gaza" news agency, following an Israeli airstrike that targeted his home in the northern Gaza Strip.

According to the center's monitoring, Israeli occupation aircraft targeted Abu Warda's home in Jabalia al-Nazla at dawn on Sunday, killing him and several members of his family.

The center reiterates that this crime is only one in a series of systematic violations committed by the occupation authorities against Palestinian journalists since the beginning of its aggression on the Gaza Strip.

The center explains that "the assassination reflects a systematic Israeli policy to suppress freedom of expression, obliterate the Palestinian narrative, and prevent the exposure of crimes and violations committed on the ground," noting that journalists have become "direct targets in an attempt to silence the voice of truth and terrorize all those documenting the facts from the heart of events."

The Center calls on the international community to open an independent and urgent investigation into the assassination of Abu Warda and into the escalating violations against Palestinian journalists, which have claimed the lives of dozens of them, resulted in the injury and arrest of many more, and led to the destruction of media facilities, in flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and conventions guaranteeing the protection of journalists.

ووفقًا لمتابعة المركز، فقد استهدف طيران الاحتلال الإسرائيلي فجر اليوم الأحد منزل الصحفي أبو وردة في جباليا النزلة، مما أسفر عن استشهاده إلى جانب عدد من أفراد عائلته.

ويجدد المركز تأكيده أن هذه الجريمة ليست سوى حلقة في سلسلة الانتهاكات الممنهجة التي ترتكبها سلطات الاحتلال بحق الصحفيين الفلسطينيين منذ بداية عدوانها على القطاع.

ويوضح المركز أن “عملية الاغتيال تعكس سياسة إسرائيلية ممنهجة لقمع حرية التعبير، وطمس الرواية الفلسطينية، ومنع كشف الجرائم والانتهاكات التي تُرتكب على الأرض”، مشيرًا إلى أن الصحفيين باتوا “أهدافًا مباشرة في محاولة لإسكات صوت الحقيقة وإرهاب كل من يوثّق الوقائع من قلب الأحداث.”

ويطالب المركز المجتمع الدولي بفتح تحقيق مستقل وعاجل في جريمة اغتيال أبو وردة، وفي الانتهاكات المتصاعدة بحق الصحفيين الفلسطينيين، التي أودت بحياة العشرات منهم، وأسفرت عن إصابة واعتقال المزيد، فضلًا عن تدمير منشآت إعلامية، في انتهاك صارخ للقانون الدولي الإنساني والمواثيق التي تكفل حماية الصحفيين.
