BNEI BRAK, Israel (VINnews) — A large piece of shrapnel struck a residential building in Bnei Brak on Saturday afternoon, penetrating from the roof into the fourth floor and continuing into the third floor — but 12 family members were unharmed after taking shelter in the stairwell when sirens sounded.

Family members said that when the air raid siren sounded, they immediately went down to the building’s stairwell, where they recited Psalms. Moments later, they heard a loud explosion. When they returned to their apartments, they found significant destruction after the shrapnel tore through both floors.
Among those in the building was Rabbi Tzvi (Hershel) Gumbo, head of a kollel at the Makowa synagogue in Bnei Brak, who lives on the third floor. His daughter’s family resides in the apartment above. Together, 12 people were inside at the time.
Relatives said there is no reinforced safe room in the apartment, and that moving quickly to the stairwell likely saved their lives. “It was a Purim miracle,” family members said.
Later at the afternoon Mincha prayer service at the Makowa synagogue on Rabbeinu Tam Street, Rabbi Gumbo recited the traditional Jewish blessing of thanksgiving, known as “HaGomel,” expressing gratitude for their survival.
