Today is said to be "International Sibling Day."
I won't hide from you that, in the past, when I was asked about the number of siblings, I would undercount them or not count them completely, because I feared their large number would be the target of the evil eye.
They were, in short, a "bush," not only in number, but also in their strong presence at every turn in my life, from the first moment they were confused about choosing a name for me until my twentieth birthday, when they all passed away, a "bush!"
Since my rank in the family is considered the last of the bunch, I am the youngest of the girls, and after me, the last of our bunch, my brother Moataz Billah, was a "bush" of siblings. This meant a swathe of experiences, pasts, stumbling blocks, obstacles, and paths I didn't need to take, and many times I avoided them because there were siblings who had preceded me, who had gone through the experience before me, and I had reached the conclusion.
All of them, without exception, were not only my companions on my journey, but they were also the ones who guided me straight, even though they were older than me. They led the journey for me many times, if not all of the time, to be honest!
As their last, I was the epitome of everything my brothers went through, even the simplest.
In their places of study, in the job market, even in their dreams and ambitions, their talents and hobbies, and their journey to nurture and develop them.
I stepped onto the stage for the first time with Ahmed's encouragement. I discovered my talent and nurtured it with Walaa's encouragement. I loved excelling in my studies, inspired by Moaz's impressive past. I received full marks in my first practical application of the wound-repair method at university, following previous instruction at home from my brother Mazen (Mohammed). I wore the Islamic headscarf, which also coincides with this day, with great support from Tasahil. I tried to understand the matters of our religion out of jealousy for Moataz, who was far ahead of me in his knowledge, even though he was younger than me. I studied at university and graduated with a significant contribution from Salsabil. I experienced all this and more in the company of my traveling companion, my twin, Ezz El-Din.
I was the one who listened to their lectures, most of which concluded with: "Don't make my mistake." For a year and a half, I've been wandering aimlessly after them. I stand in the middle of the road, not knowing which turn to take. I wait for their opinion, and their silence grows longer. Then I realize their eternal absence, and I weep for them with my loss, longing, and dispersion. I wish I could speak to them, even if only in a dream.
I imagine them gathering around my father in heaven, laughing and poking fun at each other, as they did in this world. I imagine them and wish I were with them. As they were a burden in their lives, they departed a burden, and my share in the loss was eight of my brothers:
- Mazen (Mohammed) Taher Al-Hasanat
- Ahmed Taher Al-Hasanat
- Tasaheel Taher Al-Hasanat
- Moaz Taher Al-Hasanat
- Walaa Taher Al-Hasanat
- Salsabil Aher Al-Hasanat
- Ezz El-Din Taher Al-Hasanat
- Moataz Bellah Taher Al-Hasanat
My brothers had a place in my heart that no one else could touch. With their departure, they left it empty, never to be filled by anyone else.
