دخلت عملية "طوفان الأقصى" التي أعلن القائد العام لكتائب الشهيد عز الدين القسام الجناح العسكري لحركة حماس محمد الضيف انطلاقها، يومها الواحد والعشرين، ردًا على جرائم الاحتلال بحق الفلسطينيين واقتحاماته المتكررة للمسجد الأٌقصى، فيما أعلن الجيش الإسرائيلي بدء عملية "سيوف حديدية" ضد قطاع غزة.
ومنذ بدء العملية وبحسب بيان، فقد بلغ إجمالي ما وصل لمستشفيات قطاع غزة حتى اللحظة 7028 شهيدًا بينهم 2913 طفلًا و1709 سيدات، و397 مسنًا، وإصابة 18484 آخرين.
وأشارت وزارة الصحة إلى أن الطواقم الطبية لازالت تعمل بكل طاقتها من أجل إنقاذ عشرات الحالات الخطيرة والحرجة في غرف العمليات والعنايات المكثفة.
في حين أشارت التقديرات العسكرية الإسرائيلية إلى أن نحو 2000 إسرائيلي على الأقل قتلوا وأصيب أكثر من 4000 آخرين في الهجوم الذي شنه مقاتلون من كتائب القسام يوم السبت
