- The incident began with an infiltration operation behind enemy lines west of Erez, carried out by the Qassam Brigades. Resistance fighters breached the border and launched anti-tank missiles at Israeli vehicles.

- The Qassam Brigades stated that their fighters killed a number of soldiers inside the targeted vehicles. Following this incident, a barrage of mortar shells rained down on Erez and other areas surrounding Gaza.

- After the infiltration operation concluded and an Israeli army support force arrived near Erez, a fierce armed clash erupted again near the border fence. The Qassam Brigades bombarded the Erez crossing with mortar shells and rockets to cut off reinforcements to the burning vehicles targeted in the vicinity of the site.
