The Israeli military and the Shin Bet security service confirmed for the first time that Muhammad al-Sanwar, the commander of Hamas's military wing in the Gaza Strip, was assassinated on May 13, 2025, in an Israeli Air Force airstrike on an underground command and control complex located below the European Hospital in Khan Yunis. Also killed in the strike were Muhammad Shabana, commander of Hamas's Rafah Brigade, and Mahdi Qora, commander of Hamas's southern Khan Yunis battalion. According to Israeli sources: Hamas's military leadership in Gaza severed ties with its leadership abroad. Hamas's military wing in Gaza was unwilling to release the American-Israeli hostage Idan Alexander but succumbed to pressure from the Qataris, who demanded Idan's release as a goodwill gesture to the United States. The day after Idan's release, the IDF attacked Hamas's command center in Gaza, killing, among others, Muhammad al-Sanwar, the commander of Hamas's military wing and brother of Yahya al-Sanwar. Hamas's military wing considered the attack a direct result of Idan's release, and the ensuing outrage led to the severing of ties with its leadership abroad a few days ago. Hamas is also facing an economic crisis. Hamas government employees in Gaza have received a total salary of 900 shekels (about $250) over the past four months. Meanwhile, its military wing has reportedly not received any salaries for three months.
