Israeli warplanes targeted the Bir al-Abed area in Beirut's southern suburbs, as the Israeli military announced it had launched a "targeted strike in Beirut."

The Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported that the target of the strike was Ali Karaki, Hezbollah's southern front commander. Israeli Channel 12 quoted Israeli officials as saying that "the army carried out an assassination attempt against the party's third most important figure."

This comes as tens of thousands of people are fleeing to Beirut from southern Lebanon, according to Environment Minister Nasser Yassin. In a preliminary count, the Lebanese Ministry of Health announced that 274 people, including 21 children, were killed and 1,024 wounded in the Israeli airstrikes today on villages in southern Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley.

ويأتي هذا في الوقت الذي ينزح فيه عشرات الآلاف إلى بيروت من جنوب لبنان، بحسب وزير البيئة ناصر ياسين. وفي حصيلة غير نهائية، أعلنت وزارة الصحة اللبنانية مقتل 274 شخصاً، من بينهم 21 طفلاً، وإصابة 1024 في الغارات التي شنّتها إسرائيل اليوم على قرى في جنوب لبنان والبقاع.
