Raed was asleep in the living room of my aunt’s apartment, and my sister, having heard the bombing close by, went to the roof to look out. Seeing that they were targeting homes all over town, she went downstairs to wake up Raed and let him know as they might need to evacuate at any moment. She then went to the other room to look through the window, and then returned to the living room where her son, my aunt, and my cousin were sitting. As this took place, Raed received a call from our friend Rami who lives in the same area, and walked into the same room my sister had just left. As he looked through the window to see what was going on outside, a missile hit him directly and ended his life in pieces. My sister and everyone blacked out because of the explosion and the smoke. After being able to get up, they saw that Raed was dead. A loved one who was just with them moments before - his life ended in a blink of an eye. While they were taken away from the house, their grief and trauma of seeing the person they love in pieces all contribute to the psychological effects of this tragic event, which are predated by many others, having lost family members as well as having their house razed to the ground in 2014. This is just one story of so many other painful stories from Gaza and yet the blockade is still taking place. How did this become okay for so long now? When will all this end? Since 2002 till today, I lost over 15 of my friends and cousins. They all have been killed at the hands of Israeli military in horrific ways.
