According to a family member, the men, both experienced fishermen from St. Lucia, had set sail from Savs Bay on Wednesday, February 11, for a routine fishing trip. They were expected to return by early evening. The first indication of a disaster came on Saturday, February 14, when short video clips began circulating on social media platforms. The footage geolocated to waters approximately 5 miles off Beckway shows a flash of light on the water followed by a massive explosion and moments later debris floating on the surface. A large clearly visible fragment of the vessel Zuti was among the wreckage in still images.
The videos have not been verified by any official government military or investigative source. However, residents on nearby Beckway reported hearing a loud thunderous sound and seeing a column of smoke over the sea at the time depicted in the videos. The two were identified as Ricky Joseph, a resident of Savs Bay, and another fisherman identified only as Na'vi from Miko.
Ricky Joseph's brother, Titus Joseph, shed his disbelief.
Titus Joseph: "Talking about um GPS. Yeah. To go out."
Ricky Joseph, 38, was a father of four and had been a fisherman since leaving school. He is survived by his two older brothers. Na'vi, whose real name has not been released, was a respected figure in the Miko fishing community, known by colleagues for his calm demeanor and skilled seamanship.
Community member: "People that not come and take life on water. So I feel like a good thing that's really sad for my brother and other people. They haven't fire out there and they never get no footage or video nothing to send to the..."
The tragic loss has sent waves of sorrow through Savs Bay and Miko where fishing is a way of life. Concerned citizens have been publicly questioning how and why a routine fishing trip ended in such a violent unexplained manner. Authorities in St. Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines have not yet released official findings or launched a public investigation into the matter.
