The military action was carried out by the joint task force 'Southern Lance,' an operation deployed by the Pentagon ten months ago along the main maritime drug smuggling routes. With this strike, the offensive against drug trafficking now totals at least 63 armed attacks and more than 200 deaths since operations began. The use of lethal force on the open sea continues to draw intense scrutiny from military authorities in Washington. The report coincides with a formal investigation launched by the Pentagon's Inspector General to assess whether Southern Command strictly adhered to international protocols for target selection and the use of weapons.
