Press TV’s Somalia claims 2011-12
Background
Although US surveillance drones have been operating over Somalia for at least five years, the first recorded US drone strike occurred on June 23 2011. Given the ongoing chaos in parts of the country – and the absence of a functioning civic society in much of Somalia – it can often prove difficult to substantiate reports of any attacks.
However many credible news agencies operate within Somalia and nearby Kenya. Somali government officials, along with NGOs and others, have also proved a valuable resource in confirming or refuting alleged attacks. The US military on occasion informally confirms that it has carried out operations.
Thirteen days after the first deadly US strike, Iranian TV station Press TV began reporting alleged US drone strikes on militants and civilians. It also began claiming that drones were being shot down across Somalia. In almost all of the more than 80 cases listed below, Press TV is the sole source of claims of an attack or incident. Occasionally a militant source will also carry reports, such as hiiraan.com, linked to the Islamist group al-Shabab.
On December 2, 2011, the Bureau’s investigation into Press TV’s claims of US drone attacks in Somalia was published. Following the Bureau’s revelations, Press TV’s reporting of alleged strikes ceased for over a month, until January 6 2012 when Press TV alleged that ‘at least 30 people were killed’ by a US drone strike in southern Somalia. Since then reports have been occasional.
The Bureau will continue to log Press TV’s ongoing claims of alleged US drone strikes in Somalia, alongside data on corroborated US covert forces operations within the country.
