On the evening of Saturday, December 9, 2023, four identified civilians, including two women and an infant, were killed and up to 26 civilians, including four women and eleven children, were injured in a bombardment of the towns of Nubl and Al-Zahraa in the western countryside of Aleppo allegedly perpetrated by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (formerly the Al-Nusra Front) or Al-Fath Al-Mubin militants.
According to local sources, the rebel groups attacked with rocket launchers the positions of Syrian regime forces and Iranian militias in these villages. Still, Rojava activists wrote that random shells fired by the factions fell directly on residential neighborhoods in Nubl in the Aleppo countryside.
Nubul and Zahraa news network and Rojava activists reported on Facebook about the three killed victims and 19 wounded, noting that most of them were women and children. The post also contained a picture showing the names of the victims in Arabic, and images showing the destroyed buildings. 24/24 news network reported about 22 injured people, six of them in critical condition, who were transferred to Aleppo hospitals. Sputnik News wrote about 23 injured.
A medical source from the Aleppo Health Directorate informed “North Press Agency” on Sunday that the hospital in the town of Al-Zahraa in the northern countryside and the Aleppo University and Al-Razi government hospitals received more than 30 victims, including four dead people.
The source indicated to North Press that the deaths were two women: a 60-year-old (or 63-year-old, according to some sources) Haja Fatoum Naif from the town of Nubl, and a 40-year-old Samira Al-Sutri from the town of Al-Zahraa, her ten-month-old infant Abdul Hadi Muhammad Al-Afra, and a man whose identity has not yet been ascertained. Nubul News posted an image of the killed infant who apparently died of a head injury.
The late Haja Fatoun Naif was remembered in the tribute by Nubul City news that wrote: “She passed away to God’s mercy and satisfaction at the age of sixty years as a result of the shooting attacks carried out by the infidels that targeted Nubl and Al-Zahra.”
Most of the injured people were in critical condition, as a result of injuries to the head and respiratory system, according to the medical source that talked to “North Press Agency.”
Names of the injured civilians were provided on social media. Among them were four women: Rabab Hassan Al-Hajji, 30 years old, Zahraa Muhammad Ismail, 34 years old, Wafa Murad, 30 years old, and Fatima Faisal Al-Aqra’, 25 years old, as well as four men: Saeed Hussein Ataba, 90 years old, Nader Sharbo, 40 years old, Muhammad Ali Kor Ali, 34 years old, and Yahya Hani, 25 years old.
Additionally, eleven children were injured in the deadly attack, namely, three siblings: one-year-old Ghaith Muhammad Deeb Haj Qasim, 10-year-old Hussein Muhammad Haj Qasim, and 13-years-old Zahraa Muhammad Haj Qasim, as well as one-year-old Bayan Yassin Al-Aqraa, five-year-old Zahraa Muhammad Al-Aqra’, six-year-old Abdo Basil Al-Aqra’, the six-year-old daughter of Nader Sharbo Eileen Nader Sharbo and his 12-year-old daughter Batoul Nader Sharbo, seven-year-old Nour Ali Ataba, eight-year-old Shaher Ali Sharbo, and 16-year-old Mahdi Muntadhar Al-Aqra’.
Where sources identified the belligerent, most of the sources attributed the strike to Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham militants, while the SANA news agency attributed it to Al-Fath Al-Mubin. Both militias are allowed to operate by the Turkish military and are under its influence.
