Airwars assessment
Fourteen civilians, including multiple women and at least one child, were killed and a number of civilians were injured in an alleged Israeli airstrike on the Al-Kharayeb neighbourhood in the Sidon district in the Southern Governorate of Lebanon on Monday, 23rd of September 2024.
Husband and wife Hassan Muhammad Hamada and Zainab Muhammad Hamada and their daughter Fatima Hassan Hamada were all killed in the strike. Sami Hamdan, Zainab’s nephew shared photographs of Zainab and Hassan.
Two young men, likely cousins Ayman Bassam Dahini and Ali Mohammed Dahini were also killed. Hussein Farhat mourned the death of Ayman and shared an image of a smiling young man with brown eyes and a brown beard dressed in a long-sleeved shirt.
Nour Mohammed Ghazi and three of her children, two daughters, Zahraa Hassan Jazini, Rayan Hassan Jazini, and a son Mohammad Hassan Jazini were also killed in the attack. Fatima Hussein Jazini was also listed as a victim in the strike. It is unclear whether she was related to the aforementioned Nour and her children.
Mohammad Abbas Akoush was initially considered missing according to Bintjbeil’s Facebook post. A later post by Umm Fadi confirmed that he had been killed. Photos of him were shared showing a young man holding a water bottle and bottled Starbucks coffee, smiling at the camera. His brother, Ali Abbas Akoush was also killed in the airstrike. Facebook user “El Khreib” shared with a video of the funeral of the Akoush brothers and Fadl Jamal al-Nabulsi, who was also killed in the strike. A large group of men can be seen carrying their caskets. Women released flower petals as they carried them through the streets. Both caskets were covered in green wrapping with yellow trim, which are the colours of the Hezbollah flag, though no logo was directly visible. Hezbollah flags and political affiliations with the group are common in the area but do not necessarily indicate membership of Hezbollah’s militant wing. Therefore neither brother have been counted as militants by Airwars; this assessment will be updated should further information come to light.
Mohammed Darwish shared his pain at the loss of Fadl Jamal al-Nabulsi and Ali Akoush, hoping that they would rest in “the eternal gardens”. He shared a picture of both Fadl and Ali Abbas Akoush standing next to each other in black t-shirts smiling into the camera.
Condolence messages were also shared for Fatima al-Hajj Muhammad, a young woman, who was killed in the strike. Mustafa al-Hajj, whose brother was Fatima’s grandfather, wrote: “Oh martyr Fatima… How do I mourn you? Oh bride of martyrdom, granddaughter of my brother, rather my daughter, I weep for you…”, sharing an image of a young girl or woman in a white blouse and black hijab.
A commemoration for all the victims of this incident was held in Berlin on the 29th of September 2024 at 3pm.
Many social media sources shared a collage of the victims’ pictures, featuring two elderly men, four young men, five women, and two young women who may have been under the age of 18, and one child – a boy.
Israeli airstrikes allegedly destroyed a number of buildings and cars in the same incident. Yemen Eye News shared a video of the town after the attacks. Smoke can be seen come from buildings. Twitter/X user @loquacious_lb posted an image of the partly destroyed residential building and rubble underneath it.
Where sources named a belligerent, all sources claimed the Israeli military was responsible.
