Airwars assessment
On September 23, 2024, several social media and news outlets reported on an Israeli airstrike on the coastal town of Sarafand, which resulted in the deaths of “a number” of civilians. At the time of writing, additional information regarding the number of deceased or identifying characteristics were not found online. This assessment will be updated should additional information come to light.
Many of the posts focused on the damage caused by the strike, especially the destruction of civilian homes, with many featuring similar videos showing the aftermath of the strike. Wardana News alleged that a residential building was hit. Other tweets from @F24online and @mayadeenlebanon, as well as Facebook accounts Echo of Dahieh, Ali Hassan, and Hoda Nassif reported on the loss of life, stating that a number of “martyrs” had been killed during the raids. In line with Airwars’ methodology, these fatalities are presumed to be civilians until further information comes to light that might indicate otherwise.
Multiple X users @MarAbwalhsn, @Saraa313_, and @AlMayadeenLive, and Facebook accounts Ryad Ahmad Qazmouz, Breaking from Bakaa, and Elweh w morra quoted Al-Mayadeen correspondents and National News Agency, who confirmed the presence of deceased not only in Sarafand but also in other nearby towns such as Toul, Tuffhata, Al-Muslih, and Zefta. On September 24th, 2024, the media outlet elkhabar.com reported on the mass displacement caused by the attacks, with residents fleeing towards Beirut and mountain villages. A post from @SHB942 accused the Israeli forces of using the pretext of weapons to justify attacks on civilians.
Where sources identified a belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to Israeli forces.
The local time of the incident is unknown.
