Airwars assessment

On Monday, September 23, 2024, an alleged Israeli bombardment on the town of Shokin in Southern Lebanon killed five civilians and injured a number of others when the buildings they were in collapsed due to the strike.

While nine sources reported that the strike resulted in the killing of five individuals or “nine martyrs,” the Nawa City Facebook page shared the names of three of those killed. Walid Khaled Qaddah was reportedly killed alongside Mrs. Hamda Muhammad Qaddah and Ibrahim Ismail Qaddah, both of whom were originally from the town of Al-Harak in Syria.

In the aftermath of the strike, friends and family members also took to social media to mourn their loved ones.

Facebook user Bintjbeil posted an image of a young man posing for a photograph in front of a white BMW sedan with the caption “Young Ibrahim Qaddah is missing in the Shukin raid.”

The names of the other two individuals who were reportedly killed in the incident were not found online.

Posts emphasised the initial rescue efforts: Facebook user Ali Khaled first posted that five civilians had been killed and a number of people had been wounded in the bombing, and that ambulance, relief, and civil defense crews were working to remove the rubble and transport the injured. The post was accompanied by a video which showed a fire truck was working to extinguish a fire. Further images posted by Souhail Mahmood show civil defense members working with excavation equipment amid the extensive rubble. User @alkawthartvir posted to X (formerly Twitter) that the bombing resulted in “massive destruction”, and shared video and images showing significant damage to several buildings.

Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the strikes to the Israeli military.

While some sources, such as Dewan and Ali Khaled, claimed the casualties were caused by an airstrike or “air aggression”, others, such as Watani Syria, pointed to “shelling”.

The local time of the incident is unknown.
