On Tuesday, September 24, 2024, six members of a Syrian family, including at least one woman and two children, were reportedly killed during an alleged Israeli airstrike in Lebanon. According to several sources, including News Without Borders and Twitter/X users @AbazeedMunof and @Hassan_Abdalleh, the family was originally from Tafas in the Daraa governorate of Syria and was residing in Lebanon at the time of the incident.
The number of reported casualties varied across sources; however, most reported about the death of six people. A list of the deceased was shared on social media, amongst others, by Facebook users Ywmya Dra Almtar, Alsanamin Now, and Rami Al-Bardan. The names included the young man Basil Kamal Abu Nuqta, the young woman Rowan Kamal Abu Nuqta, and two children, Munir Kamal Abu Nuqta and Baraa Kamal Abu Nuqta. Additionally, Walaa Kamal Abu Nuqta and Abdul Rahman Kamal Abu Nuqta were identified as deceased.
Other accounts, including South Media Network and Nawa City, mentioned only the deaths of Basil, Rowan, Munir, and Walaa. Numur 24 reported on Facebook that Munir, Rowan, and Baraa had died, while Basil, Mohammad, and Abdul Rahman were injured. In contrast, Rami-Al-Bardan shared on Facebook that Munir and Rowan were killed, and the other four were injured. However, most sources reported about the death of six family members, without providing details on injuries, and it is likely that they had been injured and later succumbed to their injuries. The city of Tafas in Daraa Governorate mourned the death of its six former residents.
Several images shared on social media commemorated the victims. News Without Borders posted a collage featuring a young man at the gym, with friends, and next to a car. Another picture, shared by Numur 24 on Facebook, depicted two young boys, likely Munir and Baraa, enjoying a day at the beach.
Regarding the form of attack, most sources referred to a “bombing” or an “attack” on Lebanon, while Twitter/X user @AbazeedMuonef referred in his posts to “raids.”
Where sources identified a belligerent, all sources attributed the attack to the Israeli military. Facebook users Rami Al-Bardan, Ibrahim Al-Aqla, and News Without Borders explicitly mentioned the “Israeli bombing,” while others referred to the attack as carried out by the “Israeli occupations army.”
Details on the specific location of the incident remain unclear. Although several sources noted that the family was originally from Tafas, Syria, and residing in Lebanon, the exact location of their residence at the time of the airstrike was not specified.
