At 2:30 p.m. in the afternoon of Tuesday, November 26th, 2024, an alleged airstrike by Israeli forces on a four-storey residential building killed between four and seven civilians and injured between 20 and 37 civilians in the Al-Nuwairi district of Beirut, central Lebanon. The building was alleged to be housing displaced people.
Sources, including Facebook posts from Mohammad Alsayed, Rashid Jradi, and Wadi Press, identified the civilian casualties of the strike as Fatima Suleiman Haidar (Umm Ali) and her grandchildren: Muhammad Ali Hussein Najm and Heba Hussein Najm. Nour al-Zahraa Hamoud was also reported killed, as was her husbnad Ibrahim. Ibrahim Alian was identified as a member of Hezbollah – as seen through a commemorative poster shared by source Laila Daher – and as such has not been included in civilian casualty figures.
Wadi Press included a photograph of Fatima Haider, an elderly woman clothed in black, standing in front of an array of flowers. A post shared by Rashid Jradi said taht Fatima was the widow of “the martyred Mujahid Muhammad Haidar.”
Heba Najm was a student and remembered in a post from the Amjad Institute: “When a student is following a class remotely and the connection is lost with her, she is one of the happy ones.” Civilians killed during wartime are often remembered as “happy” as death is viewed through a religious framework: the deceased is believed to have achieved the ultimate joy of meeting God and entering paradise. A funeral for the family was to be held on November 28 in their hometown of Toura.
Source Tuba remembered Noura al-Zahraa Hamoud as a “volunteer and servant.” A memorial poster from the “women’s organizations in Beirut and the Tuba Youth Organisation” imply she was involved with this group. Facebook posts from Sahafia filasteen and Mophleb report a statement issued by the The Public Health Emergency Operations Center of the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health accounting for seven casualties without identifying them. Reports on injured civilians vary: on facebook, Civilian Defense LB accounts for 20 while Sahafia filasteen and Mophleb reporting the statement from the Ministry of Public Health account for 37 injured.
Attaer News shared photographs of the strike’s aftermath, showcasing the destroyed building. Firefighters and Civil Defense workers can be seen attempting to uncover victims.
Sources such as the statement issued by the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health and Lebanon online News I identified the Israeli military as the belligerent.
