At 2:30 am on Thursday, 24th October 2024, seven identified civilians, including at least six men and a teenager, were killed and at least 14 civilians were injured in an airstrike allegedly perpetrated by the Turkish military on a gas/oil station in Al-Suwaydiyah in the Al-Jazeera canton of the Al-Hassakah governorate in northeastern Syria.  All the casualties were reportedly workers at the gas station.

There are some discrepancies in how many people were injured and killed. A post by Hawar News named 14 civilians who were injured however it stated that the number of civilians, specifically workers, that were killed was seven. The post further stated that the injured civilians were treated at a hospital in Kirkuk. ANF news, Hawar News, Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), and Alyaum TV, reported that the Turkish bombing of the station killed eight people, but the identity of the eighth victim was not mentioned.

SOHR reported that 15 civilians were injured, while Hawar News and other sources alleged that “dozens” were injured as a result of the attack.

NPA news reported the seven killed and named them:  Mayzar Al-Hassan (28 years old), Issam Al-Subaih (32 years old), Atallah Al-Khader (48 years old), Bashar Al-Awaid (17 years old), Mahmoud Al-Hussein (29 years old), Fadel Al-Khadan, whose date of birth is unknown, and Elias Issa (31 years old).

VDC news reported the injured fourteen civilians as the following: Faisal Aziz, Zahir Suleiman Muhammad, Bashar Mahmoud Muhammad, Abdul-Baqi Al-Hussein, Hussam Al-Dhiyab, Abdullah Muhammad Al-Muhamid, Abdul-Amouri, Masoud Khalil, Hussein Muhammad Al-Rajab, Abdul-Nasser Al-Muhamid, Muhammad Hamza Al-Hasso, Abdullah Hussein Ibrahim, Hamad Ahmed Al-Rammo, and Saad Allah Ahmed Al-Hussein. 

Hawar News shared images and a video from the funeral of the victims on October 26, 2024. Hundreds of residents of the cities of Karki Legi, Jal Agha, and Tal Kocher offered their condolences to the families of those killed in the the attack. Mourners held portraits of the victims, as well as a large banner with photographs of the seven dead – all of them were men of different ages except Bashar al-Awaid who was still a child. The member of the Martyrs’ Families Council, Ahmed Al-ali, offered his condolences to the families of the 7 killed, and said: “From this holy place, we condemn and denounce the brutal Turkish attacks on the infrastructure and the people of North and East Syria.”

Hawar News, ANG news and Kobani Mansiur’s Facebook account shared images showing the aftermath of the attack – a partially destroyed ceiling of the station, debris, and broken glass on the ground.

Where sources identified the belligerent, all the reports concluded that the Turkish military was responsible for the deadly attack.
