During the evening of October 2, 2024 a woman and a child were killed and two others were wounded when an alleged Israeli airstrike destroyed at least one home in the Southern Lebanese town of Haris, in the governorate of Nabatieh. Four individuals believed to be affiliated with Hezbollah’s militant wing were also reportedly killed in the strike.
According to several social media posts, 51-year-old Hala Mostafa Nasser and her eight-year-old son Mehdi Haidar Hussein Nasser were killed. Mehdi’s father Haidar Hussein Nasser was also killed, as was Haidar’s brother Jamil Hussein Nasser.
Two young men, relatives Abdullah Hassan al-Ali and 22-year-old Hassan Mohammed al-Ali were also killed.
While some sources, including Souzanita Elayoubi, South Lebanon, Echo of Palestine, @Ahmadhamieh313, and @PalinfoAr’s original post announced the deaths of the Nasser and Al-Ali family members together, a tweet from @Sa7atPlBreaking reported that nine people had been killed by attacks on two houses in Haris, and this information was mentioned by other local sources. As such, it’s not clear if the two families’ members were killed in two neighbouring strikes in Haris, or the same one. This incident will be updated accordingly should additional information become available.
Those who announced the deaths of the six individuals together included images of a man in a plaid shirt with a young boy, likely his son, and a woman whose face is blurred out. Additional images of a middle-aged man wearing a navy blue shirt, another middle-aged man with glasses and a beard, and a young man wearing a light green polo were also included in the posts.
A video shared by @alshahiden_jamil_haidar_nasser to Instagram displayed clips of the young Mehdi. In one clip, he appears to read the Quran and in another he seems to be interviewed by a content creator. In all clips he appears happy – smiling. One clip shows his gravestone, which he shares with his mom. The Hariss Academy, Mehdi’s school, also honoured Mehdi, remembering him for his love of life and joyful spirit: “Your vitality and presence were captivating. And when you scored goals, your celebration made us smile.”
Airwars has recorded Jamil, Haidar, Abdullah, and Hassan as militants.
The instagram account @alshahiden_jamil_haidar_nasser includes many videos and photographs celebrating Jamil and Haidar’s militant affiliations. The two brothers appeared to be active with Hezbollah – judging by images from their funeral and martyr photos which circulated online.
Relatives Abdullah and Hassan have also been recorded as militants. A video reel shared to Instagram by Marianna Al-Ali shows Hassan’s gravestone for a moment – in which he’s remembered as a ‘martyred mujahed’. hasanalali110__ also shared a photo of Hassan to Instagram, remembering him as “The martyr, the mujahed, and my dear friend Hassan Muhammad Al-Ali 🤍.” Finally, a post shared by Facebook account ‘Darb – Haris’ included a picture of Hassan, identified as a “martyred mujahed”, and included the caption: “The Islamic Resistance announces the martyrdom of a new moon from the moons of Haris, a martyr on the path to Jerusalem… The martyr, the mujahed Hassan Muhammad al-Ali (Amir).” For these reasons, Hassan has been recorded as a militant. This will be updated should additional information become available.
Information regarding Abdullah’s militant affiliation was essentially identical to that of Hassan. Facebook user Malik al-Ashtar and Instagram account @7senj_ both shared stylised images of Abdullah, overlaying the words “martyred mujahed” in Arabic. @7senj_’s post included the caption: “The martyred mujahed and companion in the service of Imam Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him), Abdullah Hassan Al-Ali 🤍.” Finally, a post from Facebook account ‘Darb – Haris’ posted in memory of Abdullah, writing “The Islamic Resistance announces the martyrdom of a new moon from the moons of Haris, a martyr on the path to Jerusalem… The martyr, the mujahid Abdullah Hassan Al-Ali (Sajid).” For these reasons, Abdullah has been recorded as a militant. This will be updated should additional information become available.
One of the videos shared by @alshahiden_jamil_haidar_nasser showed the remains of a home which was struck. The home is identified as Jamil’s, and images of Jamil’s martyr photo – identifying him as a ‘mujahed’ are seen propped up among the rubble of the home.
Other posts, like those of Souzanita Elayoubi (Facebook), reported the strike in Haris with a video showing the destruction and rubble as a consequence of the attack. The following day, the Lebanese Ministry of Health released an updated report of those harmed, reporting six deaths and two wounded.
Several images posted by accounts like for example, @AhmadElHajj007 on X show a large fire and smoke from the site directly after the strike.
In a video report from the media outlet Al Arabya, the reporter showed a crater and the rubble that remained of the site hit in the strike, the day after.
Where sources identified a belligerent, all sources attributed the strikes to the Israeli military.
