At least ten identified civilians, including five children and a woman, were reportedly injured in their homes by alleged Turkish artillery shelling in the city of Tal Rifaat in the Afrin and al-Shahba cantons in the Aleppo Governorate, Syria, on the evening of November 24, 2024. According to the sources, the Turkish forces used heavy artillery and rocket launchers.
Whilst the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) and Displaced Efrini, a local Facebook group, put the injury toll at 10 injured, others, including Firat News Agency (ANF), a Kurdish news outlet, put the figure at four injured.
The four victims were identified by multiple sources, but “Displaced Efrini” Facebook account provided the names of the ten victims, among them five children and one woman. Namely, among the injuries were Musa Hussein Fandou, aged either 25 or 40 years old, according to different sources, Wael Hussein Fandou, 19 years old, Ahmed Muhammad Ali, 23 years old, Haifa Shukri Khalil, 10 years old, Haifa Shukri Khalil, 15 years old, Muhammad Khalil Khalil, 1 year old, Fatima Khalil Khalil, four years old, Shukri Khalil Khalil, six years old, Farida Shukri Khalil, 24 years old, and Khalil Shukri Khalil, 25 years old.
Reporting on the incident, ANF news posted an image of little girl Haifa, who had been injured in the strike. She is seen sitting on a chair, dressed in a striped sweater, red pants, and a black jacket.
Although one name (Haifa Shukri Khalil) in the list was repetitive, but the indicated age was different, so Airwars presumes that either these were different children having the same name, or there was a mistake in the name, until further information comes to light.
According to the SOHR, there were three children and two women among the victims, but the identity of the second woman is unknown at the time of writing.
Displaced Efrini and ANF both reported that the injured were transferred to hospitals for treatment, with the former recording that some injuries were described as moderate and others as serious.
On Facebook, Jawan Barkhdan shared a video where a remnant of a missile is seen amidst the kitchen utensils and jars standing on the ground. The voice in the video says, “This is the rest of a missile as you see.”
According to SOHR, the shelling occurred in the areas where Kurdish forces were deployed, but there was no information about the potential deaths or injuries among belligerents.
Where sources attributed the strike to a belligerent, they either blamed the Turkish forces, pro-Turkish factions, or a combination of the two.
