Shortly before 10:12 a.m. on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, Russian military and/or Syrian regime forces allegedly carried out airstrikes and/or artillery strikes hitting the residential neighborhoods in Khan Sheikhoun, located in the southern countryside of Idlib, Syria, injuring five civilians, including three children and a woman. Multiple reports confirmed civilian casualties, including children, and widespread destruction.
The Syrian Civil Defense reported the casualties at 10:12 a.m., marking the post on Twitter/X as urgent. In its later post on Twitter/X at 10:23 a.m., the SCD reported that five civilians from one family were injured, including three children and a woman. One of the children was seriously injured. This was reportedly a preliminary toll of the damage caused by the bombing of residential neighborhoods by Russian warplanes in the city of Khan Sheikhoun.
Al Arabiya, via a post on Facebook, stated that there were “several airstrikes targeting residential neighborhoods in the city of Khan Sheikhoun in the Idlib countryside.”
Al Jazeera, in a post via Facebook, reports that Syrian Civil Defense (White Helmets) confirmed injuries among civilians following Russian and regime shelling and airstrikes on southern Idlib countryside, specifically targeting Khan Shaykhun and Kafr Sijna. The source shared an image showing a young girl receiving medical treatment, with her head bandaged. Radyo, in another Facebook post, published a photo of what appears to be a completely destroyed house, and added that one of the injured children was in serious condition.
Levant24_ar and Step_Agency, both on Twitter, shared the same photo of a building with several clouds of black smoke rising behind it.
The Twitter account @ibra_him_7_5 reported that Russian warplanes dropped a single load of vacuum missiles on Khan Sheikhoun.
While almost all sources identified the suspected attackers as the Russian military, Al Jazeera also held the Syrian regime forces accountable for the attack.
