An alleged Turkish drone strike hit a centrally-located market in the city of Sarrin, south of Kobani in Syria during the afternoon on 28 January, 2025, killing at least nine people, including three children and one woman, and injuring up to 20 others, including three children and women.
Initial figures were more conservative, estimating six or seven killed; these later increased to 12. An injured child succumbed to his wounds a week later, leaving a final toll at 13. Many sources stated 13 injured, with SOHR increasing this to 20, including children and women.
Seven of the killed were identified by Kobani Al Hadath as Talib Mahmoud al-Issawi, Ahmed Issa al-Issawi, his brother Mahmoud Issa al-Issawi, a son of Mahmoud al-Issa al-Dakdouk, 14-year-old Muhannad Muhammad Abdi, 6-year-old Muhammad Ahmad al-Ali, Ahmad Issa al-Ali, and an eight-year-old child. SOHR reported that a woman had also been killed, as had two children. Eight-year-old Ahmed Maysar al-Ruman, who had been injured in the strike and receiving treatment in a hospital in Raqqa, later died from his wounds on 8 February.
NPA News named the injured as 11-year-old Ahmed Abdo Issa, 14-year-old Muhammad Abdo Issa, 14-year-old Ramadan Fares, 20-year-old Osama Sobhi Mashout, 35-year-old Mutaib Issa Jassim, 40-year-old Hussein Muhammad Ali, and 35-year-old Muhammad al-Ali.
Facebook user Kobani Al Hadath shared commemorative photographs of some of the victims, three young men, and an image of an injured man – with a bandaged arm and leg – receiving treatment.
Hawar News shared a video of the impact on the market: fruit had rolled into the street, and the concrete was smeared with blood. An image published by SOHR showed a man and a teenage boy walking past the burnt remains of someone’s produce inventory while images posted by Kobani Al Hadath show the charred remains of the floor of the market.
Where sources identified a belligerent, all attributed the strikes to the Turkish military.
