Airwars Assessment
During the morning of Wednesday, January 8, 2025, a civilian was killed and another was severely injured by two successive alleged Turkish drone strikes while in a Hyundai Santa Fe civilian car. The incident occurred at the intersection of the village of Karki Khajo, which is located in the Jazira Canton, near the city of Derik (Al-Malikiyah) in the al-Hasakah governorate of Syria.
According to reports by Nudem News and Kurd News, as well as Facebook posts by Rojava and Qamishli News, a white Hyundai Santa Fe civilian car was hit by Turkish forces who carried out two consecutive strikes on the vehicle, killing one civilian and gravely injuring another. The surviving civilian, who was in critical condition, was taken to the Kobani Hospital for treatment.
Aside from reporting the incident, the General Command of the Internal Security Forces – North and East Syria- issued a statement strongly condemning attacks targeting “defenceless civilians” by the “Turkish Occupation”. The statement also highlighted that the attacks were damaging “vital infrastructure” that provided “water and electricity to Syrians”, which they argued weakens humanitarian and environmental action.
Images obtained by Aymend Abu Haroon and Adris Hennan’s Facebook page illustrated the incident and the damage done to the targeted vehicle.
Where sources identified a belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to the Turkish military.
