Airwars Assessment
On Friday, January 10, 2025, two civilians, a female Kurdish activist and her driver, were killed by an alleged Turkish drone that hit a civilian car in the village of Khan al-Jabal (Khana Seri) in the countryside of the city of al-Malikiyah, located in the north of al-Hasakah governorate in Syria.
According to an article by SOHR news, Shehnaz Omar, a key member and administrator of the women’s organisation “Star Conference”, and her driver, Ahmed Hasan, were killed.
The Star Conference Council issued a statement published by both ANF News and Rohani.TV News confirming the death of the victims and claiming that “women activists” have been victims of various attacks in the conflict. They also highlighted and praised the work of Shehnaz Omar, whose “simple personality and humble morals” won the “hearts of all women”. They also commended her for never surrendering to injustice as a Kurdish woman who always “showed a firm stance.”
Images of Shehnaz obtained by Qamislo Homeland on Facebook, as well as Hawar News, showed that she was a middle-aged woman with long grey hair and brown eyes. In a widely circulated image, she is wearing a black, embroidered sweater and a thick, brown scarf, standing in front of a brick wall.
Where sources identified a belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to the Turkish military.
