Airwars assessment

Local sources reported that up to 13 civilians, including an entire family of eight, died in an alleged Russian airstrike on Qabtan al Jabal, with some reports saying that a school was struck. While most sources blamed Russia, others also pointed to the involvement of regime artillery.

The Shaam News Network said that eight civilians died and several others were wounded when Russian planes targeted Qabtan al Jabal with “several raids“. A later report from SNN said that eight died from the same family.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights also blamed Russia, again putting the death toll at eight.

This was backed up by a report by the (pro-Jihadi) media activist, Mayssar al Hadid al Hamwi, who said: “An entire family made up of the mother, father and children totaling 8 killed in the Russian pig warplanes that targeted Qabtan al jabal in the northern Aleppo countryside“. The majority of other sources also blamed Russia, though death counts varied.

Syrian Press Center said: “It is noteworthy that Russian Aviation committed a Friday night massacre of a family of eight people and wounded seven others in an air raid on the town of Qabtan al Jabal.”

Al Souria put the death toll as high as 13, while the White Helmets reported two deaths but did not say who the warplanes belonged to.

However, other sources also pointed to regime involvement. Taha_Alhelo referred to “regime artillery shelling”, while LCCSY said regime forces targeted the White Helmets while they attempted to rescue people from a Russian airstrike on the town. According to Akbar Alan news, the family of eight – of which three were children – died in regime shelling which “was accompanied by Russian warplane raids.”
